Okay, RCA outputs have been around forever and a day and are of the lowest analog quality. Only hook your equipment up this way if you have to and your TV offers no other possible inputs.

S-Video was created at the oncomming of DVD technology to help get a better picture, it will be better than RCA but still not that great. Use this option if you only have S-Video or RCA options. If you hook up S-Video it is true that you will need to hook up the audio alternativley. I would recomend if you have a receiver with optical inputs to use the fiber optic of coax digital out from your DVD player to your receiver if not RCA cables will do for the sound to the TV.

You Cr(red), CB(blue) and Y(green) are component hook ups. This is for the progressive scan output on your DVD player. This will give you superior quality video as opposed to the last two options. You will however need a high definition TV as these are the only ones with component inputs because components will offer up to 1080i resolution. If you dont have a high definition TV save and buy one. It is well worth it due to the amount of technology being poured into this avenue currently. Dish Network is offering about 30 high definition channels now, not including the local channels.

Also, there is now HDMI which looks sort of like an overgrown USB input. This offers true digital quality high definition output and is really the way to go now. Also if you purchase a high end HDMI switching AV receiver this is handy cause it carries digital sound with the video so you only need one cable to the receiver then one cable to the TV. Works wonderfully and offers the best picture without a doubt.

Have fun!

1. DTS would have the best audio quality, but your a/v receiver would also have to be able to process the DTS signal.
S-video for video signal, but your TV would have to be able to accept a S-video cable as well.
If not RCA is acceptable on most equipment.

2. RCA output is not the same as digital coaxial.
RCA is analog, coaxial is digital.

3. S-video is supposed to be superior to RCA.

4. The Cr,Cb, & Y output is actually what they call component signal, your TV must have this connection too, or it would be useless.

Gateway used to have some stores in the USA, don't know if they still do, but if they do see if one is located near you.
Since your DVD recorder warranty expired, you probably could take it to have it repaired at any local repair shop. All DVD's work the same.

Short answer to 1 - 4.
S-video willbe a higher quality than RCA, but the component video(Cr, Cb, Y) will be a higher quality than both of those. They sell component video cables to connect these, most DVD players and newer TV's will have the component video connectors, they are color coded too just match green to green red to red and blue to blue.

Not sure about Gateway and the repair issue, but my advice is go on their website and send an email to technical support or customer service, it might take longer to get a response but it would be cheaper and less frustrating than trying to call. Sorry you had trouble with that product.

1.s-video is for video and dts is the sound. i chose these for you; but if you find these things complicating, i can recommend a/v rca, its very practical.
2. no
3. almost the same, no difference.
4. if you have an alternate video output, like a projector you can use these three output jack.
5.at these days theres a lot of more better brand dvd recorder at a cheaper price, its more practical to buy a new one rather than spending your money on repair and waiting time.

1) s-video. DTS is satillite signal
2) no, digital coax is a better audio sound provided that both units have that option.
3) s-video is the better of the 2
4) You can only connect them if your TV has those inputs.
5) You can take it to a radio shack and they should be able to send it out for you. They take care of all of your shipping. Their repair center is limited though. But they have done pretty well as far as I can tell.
