It is how they hook people in selling salvation to the worried and spiritually bankrupt.
It is the cornerstone of the cult my 15 years in the cult I believed for 14 of them that everyone was going to die, in 1975 we actually were waiting for it, certain it was gonna happen that year.
but it didn't they said it might again in 1980, they were always banging on about how Russia was the King of the North and America was the King of the south and Armageddon was coming at first in the form of Nuclear war followed by gods wrath.

Well other Christians teach this too because the Bible which is the word of God tells us:

The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church, the grand climax of the gospel. The Saviour's coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfillment of most lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that Christ's coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed, and we are therefore exhorted to be ready at all times. (Titus 2:13; Heb. 9:28; John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; Matt. 24:14; Rev. 1:7; Matt. 24:43, 44; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; 2 Thess. 1:7-10; 2:8; Rev. 14:14-20; 19:11-21; Matt. 24; Mark 13; Luke 21; 2 Tim. 3:1-5; 1 Thess. 5:1-6.)

For the same reason people have been saying this for thousands of years.
Their thought system shows them a scary evil world that they fear. Fear is always the emotion behind any of these ideas that the world is just too bad or evil to continue.

This works the way it does because God provides us with what ever world we want.

If we want something different we need to change our mind about the world we see around us.

When we do God gives us that new world instead.

Each of us gives the world all the meaning that it has for us.

I don't see the world as scary or evil. I see a peaceful and loving world.

One of us must be living in a delusion.

I'd much rather have mine than theirs.

I think they are very safe in saying the world will end. Scripture says the world as we know it will end. Where they go wrong is setting times. No one knows the time. Jesus is supposed to have come back at least on two occasions as they predicted. There is always an excuse as to why it didn't happen. Some denominations have gone as far as making a prediction and then when it didn't happen, they claimed it did and He is in the desert after He secretely returned. Make no mistake about it, when Jesus does return, and He will, scripture predicts that every eye will see Him. It won't be done in secret.

The Bible has much to say about the fact that “the world is passing away.” In many places it contains specific information about the time that it also calls “the conclusion of the system of things.” But when the Bible speaks about this “end of the world,” it does not mean that our home, planet Earth, is to be destroyed.—1 John 2:17; Matthew 24:3, King James Version.

The Bible uses the word “world” (Greek, ko´smos) in different ways. sometimes in the Bible “the world” refers to mankind in general. This is the world that God loved and for which Jesus died. However, The Oxford History of Christianity states: “The ‘world’ is also a term in Christian usage for something alienated from God and hostile to him. “Because you are no part of the world, . . . the world hates you.”—JOHN 15:19. “We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) Jesus himself called Satan “the ruler of this world.”—John 12:31; 16:11. So, This “world” that will be destroyed is the mass of humanity that is alienated from God.

God does not have to destroy the earth in order to eliminate the frightful conditions that are so prevalent on it. The earth is not causing the problems in human society today. People are responsible, especially people who have little or no regard for the Creator, Jehovah God, and his laws. They are the ones who are turning life on this earth into a nightmare for so many. But God does not have to destroy the earth to rid it of such ones.

Jehovah God has decreed that this earth must eventually become a global paradise, with its inhabitants enjoying everlasting life in perfect health and happiness. So what is to end could not be this literal earth, for the Bible plainly declares: “The earth abideth for ever.” What is to end is this evil system or state of things. This means that the world that mankind has known ever since the days of the Noachian flood will soon be blotted out; a righteous new world will take its place.

Only one book tells of the “time of the end.” That is the Bible. Its prophecies, for the most part, have their major fulfillment in the “time of the end.” Then an understanding of the prophecies would be available to truth seekers: “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Dan. 12:4, AS) Lack of knowledge concerning the “time of the end” leads to death. How vital, then, to have the right answers to certain questions! What is to end? When will it end? How will it end? Who will end it?

They don't say the world is going to end.
They say that this wicked system of things is going to end. There is a big difference.
Jehovah created the earth to be inhabited. He didn't form it for nothing(Isa.45:18).
Jehovahs original purpose was to have perfect humans who were designed to live forever, inhabit and have offspring on a beautiful paradise like earth. They were to look after it and the animals and live in peace, harmony and security.
The fulfillment of Bible prophecy shows that we are living in what the Bible calls "the last days" of this system.
In God's appointed time,He is going to bring a end to this wicked 'world' of mankind,just as He did in the days of Noah.And only then will God's purpose for man and the earth be finally fulfilled.(Rev.21:3,4;
Ps.37:9-11,29;Pr2:21)

I'd say they are correct, even Jesus speaks of the end of this world. Mostly, they speak about the Battle of Armegedon, which is supposed to be the supernatual battle when Jehovah will destroy all wickedness and preserve only those that believe in Him.

I only advice is that too many people spend too much time trying to caculate when that day will come. Don't do that. Jesus, Himself, told us that no one knows the hour except God. Instead of worrying about when it will come, we should be worried about our closeness to God. Think about this, do any of us know when we will die? If the end doesn't come for like another 200 years, we won't even be alive to see it.

Concentrate on making your faith strong and trusting God. That way, you will be ready no matter what happens.

God bless.

Jehovah's Witnesses actually believe that humans will live FOREVER on the earth!

However, the 'world' of mankind alienated from God will be judged soon. Jehovah's Witnesses understand the Scriptures to teach that God's Kingdom will soon replace all earthly governments.
(Daniel 2:44) God of heaven will set up a kingdom... It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite

That Kingdom will rule over the vast majority of mankind, most of whom will have been raised from the dead after Armageddon.
(John 11:23,24) Jesus said to her: “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”
(Acts 24:15) There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Until that resurrection, there is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all
(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]
(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades ["hell"] were hurled into the lake of fire

While a limitted number of humans will be resurrected to heaven to share in ruling over mankind, the vast majority (literally more than 99.9%) of Jehovah's Witnesses expect an EARTHLY hope, the same hope given to Adam and Eve.
(Genesis 1:28) God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill THE EARTH and subdue it [caps added]
(Genesis 2:17) You must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die [so never eating from that tree means never dying]

Interestingly, the Scriptures are full of references to this earthly hope.
(Psalms 37:11) 'the meek will possess the earth'
(Proverbs 2:21) 'upright will reside in the earth'
(Isaiah 45:18) 'God formed the earth to be inhabited'
(Matthew 5:5) 'the mild will inherit the earth'
(Revelation 21:3) The tent of God is with mankind
