Contrary to popular belief, everything can give you a hangover. Most of them are caused by dehydration. Drinking a lot of water will enable your body to process the alcohol efficiently and cleanly.
Some types of booze have extra toxins and chemicals that can also hurt you. In general, boozes that are not clear have more of these. These extras linger in your system and cause hangovers.
Shochu is clear, so a lot of Japanese shochu fully advertises that you won't get a hangover. But drink a liter of the stuff and see what happens - your head will be exploding in the morning.
The best thing you can do to avoid a hangover is drink on a full stomach, mix in a water every now and then, drink as much water as you can before you go to bed, along with a couple of Advils (not aspirin or tylenol - aspirin can upset your stomach, and tylenol gets processed through your liver (which is already busy processing all that alcohol).

Sake is a good drink when it is hot. Soju is better served with some type of sweet juice. Trust me, I was stationed in Korea in 2000 to 2001. I drank my fair share of Soju. If you can find it try Jinro Soju. I think it's the best. Stay away from the stuff that has a little frog on the bottle. Oh and it gave me the worst hang over of my life the first time i tried it. Enjoy Adashi
