Or are they viewed as traitors? Mallory and Semmes seem like pretty impressive individuals. Are they studied?

Absolutely. My NROTC unit spent more time last year studying the Confederate Navy than the Civil War era US Navy. Not only are they not viewed as traitors, they are actually discussed with open admiration for their courage, tactics, and innovative technologies.

If you mean the current U.S. Navy, I don't believe it matters to them at this point. Famous Civil War battles at sea are still studied at Annapolis I am sure.
If you mean the U.S. Navy at the time of the CW then..yes they were viewed as traitors and rebels. The CS Navy had many victories though and were respected for their victories.

I think the ironclads gave the US Navy a pretty scare back in the day.
