Nothing is free, you have to work for it. It would be wonderful if you could get "free money" for a no-kill shelter....but it's not going to happen. You could ask for donations sure, but you're probably not going to get enough to always have the bills paid and the dogs fed. You should get a job and start saving up! It's a great idea and I have had the same one myself!! But it takes hard work, commitment, and perserverance.

As great as your intentions are, it would take quite a bit of money to start up and run a shelter. Most shelters lose money and are only open because they have many loving volunteers.

You might be able to get a loan, but that isn't free money of course. If it were easy I think a lot of people would have done it by now.

I also know how hard it is to sit by while animals are euthanized, but sometimes the shelter really doesn't have a choice. I would spend your time volunteering for the one in your area, even if you don't agree with their policy, and try to help with information booths and stuff to educate the public. Getting those animals adopted, and informing people about not impulsively buying pets, is probably the best you can do.

There is no such thing as free money even for a good cause.
Our rescue does all types of fund raisers and we are still short on money all the time. The vet care and food costs and such are very large and we do all sorts of fund raisers. We apply for grants and sometimes get them.Take a class in grant writing and learn how to apply for them. We have one person who does just that for our rescue. We are a 501 3C (non profit charity) so that people who donate can use it as a tax deduction.
It takes time and much effort.
Best Friends also has classes on how to start a rescue or shelter and one of those would be very good way to learn what you need to know.

My recommendation would be to VOLUNTEER first for a rescue group or a no-kill shelter so you have a better understanding of what goes into running one. "I want to start a no-kill shelter" sounds easy... in theory.

But when you start getting into the realities of resources, screening adopters, vet bills, grooming bills, dealing with animals who have behavioral problems, dealing with idiot owners who are "moving and can't take the dog but I'm sure you can find him a good home" (yeah, everyone is just beating down my door for a 7 year old intact male Chow...), the truth about what it takes to rescue comes to light. It's not as easy as it looks.

Volunteer first - they'll appreciate the help and you'll be able to help while you learn.

Because those of us who work and volunteer at open-door ("kill") shelters just LOVE to kill animals! Woohoo! It's great!

Um, not. Many is the time that I've shown up to volunteer to find a staff member standing outside the building crying because one of her favorite shelter residents has had to be put down. It is heartbreaking. To some extent, people who are involved with no-kill shelters get shielded from the awful reality of pet overpopulation and the irresponsibility of most pet owners. At an open-door shelter, we have to take in every single animal that gets brought in the door. Old, infirm, sick, abused, aggressive, untamed, neglected, starving--we have to take them all and we have to figure out what to do with them when our facility only has so much space and so many staff and volunteers and so much funding. No-kill shelters are free to reject animals that are brought to them, for space, staffing or behavior issues. Once all their kennels are full, they can turn away people who come by wanting to give up their dog. No more room at the inn. And then the person with the pet they want to give up gets back in their car, drives to the nearest open-door shelter and leaves the pet there because an open-door shelter can not refuse.

If you are sick of seeing homeless pets die (and believe me, no one could be sicker of it than me), I suggest you volunteer at your local open-door shelter to help socialize, rehabilitate and train the animals there so that they can be adopted more quickly, making room for more unwanted animals. And above all, I'd suggest that you become a huge LOUDMOUTH about people spaying and neutering their pets. The reason for pet overpopulation (and hence the reason why shelters have to euthanize 4 million cats and dogs every year) is because PEOPLE DON'T SPAY AND NEUTER THEIR PETS! Ladies and gentlemen, there is the cause of all this needless suffering and death: human selfishness.

Have you checked your county, city, and state requirements? If you have been given an okay to do so, you'll have to start fund raising, having raffles, etc..

Also, you need to determine what you will do if you get animals no one will adopt, Sickly, old, cancerous to name a few...

I don't know, but if you find someone giving away "free money" I'll take a million, give or take a few thousand.
