It sounds as if are not using a firewall (do not use the XP firewall--it does not stop things going out the backdoor of your computer). You also need (anti-)spyware programs.

Go to this site:

http://komando.com/downloads/categories.aspx?cat=Security

for links to good, free security programs.

I use ZoneAlarm firewall; Spybot and Ad-aware for spyware.

Don't forget an anti-virus. The above site also contains links To Grisoft's AVG (free) anti-virus.

Use only one anti-virus and only one firewall. But you can and should use multiple spyware programs.

Update these programs once a week and run them. I run Ad-aware each time before I log off. (Don't update the firewall--any updates will be sent to you automatically).

Also, be sure you are receiving Microsoftt's updates. Security patches and Office updates have been combined into one site at Microsoft: http://update.microsoft.com/ Also, http://tinyurl.com/eylck will take you to the same update site.

Windows XP can be set up to receive updates automatically:
Click Start, Control Panel
In Classic view, double-click ‘System’
Select the ‘Automatic Updates’ tab
Select ‘Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.’
Create the schedule using the two boxes
Click Apply and then click OK.

One last thing: If you download free games, be sure to read the EULA agreement--the text can be difficult to understand--but if there is something that says you agree to allow them to track you in order to send you personalized advertising--WATCH OUT!

Go to http://www.filehippo.com and download Spybot Search&Destroy and run it, be sure to use the check for updates feature. Also download Google's toolbar with free popup blocker, at http://toolbar.google.com.

Check out this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsTC02PKetIXixsnvZBYqVfsy6IX?qid=20060712122722AA7vTh6

It helped me fix my problem. The site http://forum.networktechs.com/t1819059447-attention-read-me-before-posting-for-help.html was very helpful.

All the info is great!
