A Great Dane is a great house dog...yes they are big, but they don't require a lot of room like everyone thinks...a schn or a jack russell needs more room and more exercise than a Great Dane.

Our house is only 1465sq ft. We have an almost 6 month old AKC black male, and next summer, we are going to get an AKC Harl female (white with black spots). The Breeder that we got him from, has 6 in her house!

By the way, I have 3 kids (My husband, and 2 that I actually gave birth to) LOL.

Small dogs tend to be very hyper and require a lot of attention and are a pain in the a$$ to housebreak. Go find a big dog, Great Dane, Mastiff, Greyhound. They are very mellow and easy to care for. Stick with females, they tend to be more protective, males are more agressive. Females make better personal "guard dogs".

How about asking what is best for the dog.
How much time do you have for it?
How much can you afford to pay for it?
Can you afford food, shots, worm meds, toys, bed, spay/neuter, collar, leash, food dishes & training classes?
I have a rather large house but I didn't buy a great dane just because I had room for 1.

A toy breed of dog and one that doesn't shed to much. A bishon shitzu would be a good choice. And don't get a job with high energy, like a Jack Russel. They will go crazy in smaller homes.

Most of the "Toy" breeds, as well as *some* of the "Companion" or "Non-Sporting" breeds.

Check out http://www.akc.org for more info. There, you can look at breeds by category. Their breed descriptions will tell you if they are fit for life in a small home or if they need a lot of room to run.

Good luck!

well if the landlord dont mind you could get a beagle or a yorkie actually you can have any dog so long as you walk it but with beagles you only have to let them outside once an hour or so and they get little bursts of energy sometimes and thats good to have a toy around just incase i had one once named her princess she got stolen and beagles do bark but they are sniffer dogs so if you train him to you could find anything one thing though tip for training-hide goodies under carpets and junk and praise him when he finds it :D

I have an Italian Greyhound. She doesn't take up much space at all and she is absolutely sensational in small areas.

my favorites are chihuhuas, chihuahua mixes and pomeranians...they are great dogs. once you own a chihuahua and socialize it you realize that none of the stereotypes are true. plus they dont really need too much exercise.
