I like mine. When it was new it was my grandfather's and he had no problems with it. My dad bought it from him and drove the heck out of it (lots of travel for work) and he liked it. I got it in 2001 and commuted 75 miles a day in it until 2 months ago. It has 250,000+ miles on it and only just started to give us trouble. So, now it is our in-town car and I have a new commuter car. It's 4wd and gets 17-18 mpg highway. I really liked the keypad entry on the door and the air vents for back seat passengers. 2 things I really miss on my new car.

No, definetly not!
A very bad thing about an Explorer is that it is a gas guzzler.
If you aren't looking for anything in particular I would stick with either:
Honda or Toyota
All Honda's & Toyota's have been known for superb reliabilty, the cars receive better gas mileage, and have a better resell price than any other vehicle's on the market.
That is why a Ford Explorer isn't a good choice!

Yes, possibly. With a lot of miles and 11 years, yours may not be. They are comfortable and fun to drive, but I'd question dependability for the age of it.

My brother-in-law has one. He says the transmission has a tendency to go out on the truck.

If it is 2wd it is great, it will run for many miles. If it is 4wd it is going to fall apart at around 100k
