My 2 year old is just starting to say stuff, too. Just keep talking to him/her ALOT and make sure that you're using the real words! Water is not wahwah! They'll pick it up when they're ready. When you give the child something, make sure you're saying what the item is. Don't let them point at things in order to get it -- make them say what it is. The main thing is that they'll talk when they talk. If you're really that concerned, you can always talk to your doctor.

I don't Care how many people tell me kids at Two don't talk or its OK. My son was the same way and my nephews and my niece were all talking by then saying at least a few good words. My son was Partially Deaf it took college student studying this field to finally listen and do a hearing test, HOW SAD IS THIS. My son has/had Otis media???( fluid in the middle ear) and had tubes put in. He is know 6 and is very affected he talks without pronunciation of words and very behind with alot of verbal and communication skills. I believe that he still has some sort of problem but again i can't get anyone to listen to me. So i would listen to others if feel strongly about it don't wait this is your child and he is the future. I would start on how much you talk to him how fast do you talk to him. I noticed i talk really fast and my oldest can't understand as fast as I speak. be patient but remember if you honestly feel there is a problem take him to a doc or maybe try speech therapist if you are that worried. Again it might be nothing and it might be something. you are his mom only you can be able to know for sure. good luck

No worries! When my son was 2 he only said "hi" and "hot." I was starting to worry about him and then all of a sudden he started repeating the last word of everything I said.

As long as your child can understand you, follow directions and communicate in some way, like pointing to what he/she wants, I'd give it a month or two and see what happens.

Now my son is 2 1/2 and he has all his books and favorite songs memorized. When I read him a story, I leave random words out and he fills in the words.

Also, work with your child to practice words. He/She may be able to talk and you just don't know it yet. When my boy was 2, I just kept asking him, "Can you say.....Apple?" or whatever, and sometimes he could!

your kid should be saying at least 20 words and make two word sentences. that is not so say some don't progress slower and still end up normal, but this could be a warning sign of hearing loss or autism, in which case the sooner the diagnosis the better for the child. my nephew was evaluated at 2 - he hummed his words - and was found to have clogged ears. now he is 30 mo and is fixing to have to get tubes because his ears don't drain right. he is also scheduled to see a speech therapist this month.

you should mention it to your dr.

I would bring this up to the pediatrician. It could be normal but you also wouldn't want a problem going on and not know it. I would also contact an Early Intervention Program in your area. I did this for my daughter who is not talking much and found that she had a very big delay in speech and other areas. She gets a speech therapist that comes to the house once a week for a hour. Definitely bring it up to his/her ped doctor as soon as possible they should also be asking you these questions when you have their two year check up.

I was told that by age 2, the child should be able to say at least 20 words. If not, I would talk to your public health nurse or doctor. There may be a hearing problem.

No, most 2-yr-olds don't talk much, but they do talk a little more than just 'mama' and 'dada'. Can he/she say things like drink and ball or those small-yet-common words hat you use around her a lot? if not, you stillmight not have any room for concern. My cousin didn't talk to anyone til he was 3 and one day he just started talking like he always had been. Maybe he was just a little shy. hope this helps!

My 2 year old speaks like crazy, but then she is around talking alot, so she picks it up fast. Some kids talk early, some late, I wouldn't worry too much, but if you have concerns, take them to a pediatrician, he can check, and recommend a hearing test, just in case. Try talking more with your child, and showing flashcards, they'll pick stuff up really fast.

My daughter was the same way. Everyone kept asking when she'd talk...now she won't shut her mouth! My second on the other hand is different, she's been talking since she was just over a year...but she also has her sister to listen to all day. Although I would ask the doctor if it continues for more than another 6 months.
