I take about 4 Ashtanga yoga classes a week, so I'm pretty flexible. I usually skip stretching after weight trining for the sake of time. Am I hindering strength gains by doing so? What about stretching after cardio workouts? Personal trainers, what is opinion on this?

No, it is not always necessary to stretch after lifting weights. With all the yoga, flexibility in general is not going to be an issue for you. The only thing you are really missing out on by not stretching afterwards is a chance to reduce your soreness. Stretching after lifting, or cardio for that matter, will help flush out some of the lactic acid that is beginning to sit in your muscles. This build up of lactic acid is one of the reasons you are going to be sore the next day. Stretching will help minimize that to a certain degree.

Any time you've worked a muscle, it's best if you stretch it out...it's better for the muscle and the results you are seeking...many though, for the sake of time and convenience, don't stretch as they should...

It doesn't take that long...hold the stretch for about 15 seconds, and depending on the activity you did, you may just need to stretch a few muscles...

Yes you are, strength combined with flexibility is an amazing combination, stretching after any work out is good. I'm not personal trainer but played football and Hoops thorugh high school and college. They always made us focus on stretching as much as possible.

Try doing an exercise before stretching. Like run for 5 minutes the stretch every muscle in your body.

It's a good idea to stretch after, stretching helps with flushing out the lactic acid that builds up (the thing that makes you sore the next day). It's nota cardinal rule that if you don't your workout was wasted it helps in keeping the muscle supple and gets the blood flowing back to it to help in repair, when you use your muscles you are slightly tearing it everytime and the reason it gets bigger is it repairs itself so stretching helps to aid with the healing.

It is a very good idea to stretch after a workout. The muscles in the body tend to tense and possibly freeze up, by stretching afterwords you are allowing your muscles to relax. Stretching allows your muscles to take to the workout better.

OK, I'm not a personal trainer. However, it is my understanding that one should always stretch *before* a workout to prevent injury. I am unsure of why one would need to stretch afterwords (aside from the fact that it just feels good).

By stretching after you weight lift you allow more blood to enter your muscles (than if they were still tight) allowing the muscles to rebuild faster after the workout. Therefore stretching after weight lifting allows your muscles to better recooporate, and you became stronger, therefore it is pretty important even if you are already flexible

you should stretch before and after ANY exercise. a regular warm-up and cool-down are necessary to reduce the risk of injury. it can take as little as 5-10 minutes, so you're not really saving all that much time.

Well I dont know specifically. However I have just strained my ligaments in my arm because i skipped stretching. I cant train now for six weeks. From now on i am taking no chances.
