the petals are build up with vacules containing flower oil and essence. They may be extracted in different methods. Like distillation whereby heat is needed. By maceration and percolation methods, ethanol will serve as an extraction fluid. The essence can be also extracted with the use of fat like vaseline, example the petals of rose will be embedded in vaseline layer by layer, stored, them rose oil will be separated from the fat. This is a complex method of essence extraction that makes rose a very expensive product.

depends on the flower. for instance in rose it is only the flower petals, while in basil or mellissa it is the whole plant, in caraway it is mainly the seeds, in oranges it is the peel. ..you crush the part and smell and you will know.

best process to get the essence is water vapour distillation - used in industrial scale (i remember vast rose fields in Bulgaria - just beyond description) and you can try it at home - i tred it for oregano and melllisa because i have plenty in my garden and it worked and was fun
