I bought bananas over a week ago and have had them for week by a window and they are still green! What's wrong? They seem to be normal bananas and I know they are not plantains... What's going on? Ususally they are ripe by now...

They appear to be real bananas, not plastic, although I did start to wonder for a while...will open one... Yep. Crunchy banana! Maybe they are special crunchy bananas that accidentally cross-pollenated with plantains?

Plantains=plantanos, last time I checked (although I had this argument with a friend from the Dominican Republic before... maybe there are plantain-like bananas as well?)

I'm not going to say which grocery store sold them, but they were definitely sold as bananas. Usually the brand of banana I buy is ripe by now too... but for some strange reason these are still green a week later... this has never happened to me before! Maybe I will just keep trying to let them ripen normally just to see how long it will last and get some new... er... riper bananas to eat in the meantime...

Yeah, I know they should be yellow. That's what I am waiting for!
Also, I don't care how good they are for my colon, I do not like the taste or texture of unripe bananas... Oh, no, wait.. You're probably just teasing. Got it. Thanks.

Ok, I understand about the paper bag idea, but WHY are they still green. LMAO! They are STILL green from days before I first posted this question! How is that possible?? I only have four left to experiment on (cut to see if ok inside - still chalky-unripe on last try).

Not that this will help, but two months ago I bought bananas at S@m's Club.. we had them for 4 weeks and they never turned yellow. They went directly from bright green to brown. I don't know what was wrong with them, but my mom has had the same thing happen to ones that she bought there. So, I don't buy them there anymore! Must be some weird fluke!

Just bought some at Meijer that are doing the same thing. Are they bad or different or what?

If your bananas are too green, you can put them in a paper bag to ripen. If you add an apple or tomato to the bag, the bananas will ripen even faster. When your bananas have turned the color you want, but you can't use them right away, store them in your refrigerator. The skin will darken, but the bananas will stay fresh for up to two weeks.

I am having this problem too The local grocery store that i buy my food at has had nothing but green bananas lately. I brought a bunch a couple of weeks ago, and they never turned yellow, they went straignt to brown. I brought another bunch last week, and they are still green. I am going to try another store

That is very interesting. Cut a piece off one and see what is going on inside.

Actually green bananas are better for your colon.

I've heard to put them in a paper bag with an apple inside.

are you sure its a banana? It should have ripened by now. I would not eat it. Maybe take it back to where you bought it and ask someone. I defiantly would not eat it.

Maybe they are platanos, or you have to wait until they "mature".

Sorry but I am using puertorican terms.

Platanos are like bananas meant to be green.
Mature is when a green banana turns yellow.
