Most practical - give her money.
Then she can get what she really wants/like.
If you end up getting her something she dun like, she can either pretend to like it to make you happy, or you will be upset she dun like it.
So, give her money!

First-what is your budget? Second-what type of girl is she? A fancy purse (like a coach purse), with lip gloss is always a safe bet. Are there any concerts that she would enjoy? How about a bracelet from Tiffany Jewelry? Does she have a car---if so you can get her a gas card to go along with any gift. Is she into makeup? A gift certificate to clinique etc. If you want to be sentimental---get her an engraved jewelery box from things remembered. Treat her like a princess for the day-got get massages and a pedicure then buy her lunch. When I was 16 I wish someone would have started a hope chest for me....
Hope this helps---a few ideas. Good Luck.

McyD... it IS a job and not one an unreluctant second wife should have to do. Those are NOT my kids. If they were, they'd be completely different people.
If a father wants to have a relationship with his daughter, he should step up to the plate and have a relationship, including gift buying. If this kid has a brain in her head, she'll know the gift didn't come from her dad and HE's the one she wants the relationship with - not his new wife who, let's face it, she will never think of as her mother either. It's very Brady to say "treat them like your own," but it's just NOT realistic.

Have just a nice chat with her and see where her interests lie. Take her shopping to her favorite spots and make note of the types of things she is drawn to. Then, see if you can purchase something along her interests, but in a more personal leaning. Turning 16 is important, but don't press her to grow up any sooner than she needs to; she needs to enjoy being a kid as long as she can; keeping her "innocence" in perspective and something to be cherished and enjoyed.

Most teenage girls love to shop. Give her a gift card to the local mall. If you have a good relationship with her, offer to take her and a friend to the mall to spend it, go to lunch, maybe even get a manicure. Do the girly stuff. (Don't be offended, though, if she turns you down. You know how girls are at that age.)

What does she talk about most of the time? That might give you a clue on what she likes...
Has she seen High School Musical? Buy her the DVD and if she really likes it... Buy her the soundtrack too

It is not a job. She is your step daughter and you should treat her like she is your own. All teens like clothes so take her on a shopping spree.

ask her about her favorites during a regular conversation and see if you can get any ideas that way as to what she really wants or maybe browse around to see what she really needs like if you are putting something away in her room and notice she needs new shoes. stuff like that...
