Growing up in school and a area populated with new australians i found that many of the shop keepers did not know english as did many of the parents. I also was left out in conversations at school as they opted to speak their own la Do you think as policy they should have to learn to speak it

Yes. If someone likes a country enough to move to it, they should also like it enough to embrace the culture, customs, and language of their new home. Otherwise, what is the point in moving?

I understand all sides of this question. I was an exchange student and I learned first-hand how difficult it is to learn (and use!) a new language. Yes, an immigrant should make an effort to learn at least the basics of their new country's language. This will enable them to do necessary tasks without using their children as translators. However, the locals should also realize how difficult the effort is for the immigrant. Sometimes, they actually do have a working knowledge of the language, but are too scared to use it b/c they don't want to make mistakes and be laughed at by the native speakers.

I used to work in a town that was full of Koreans and the vast majority there because they never left their little community didn't bother to learn the language (particularly if they were of an older generation). This made my job and undoubtedly the job of anyone else who needed to communicate with them a nightmare. I think therefore they (like other immigrants to Britain) should learn the language and possibly a bit of history about the country (like they do in the states) and we should do the same if we go abroad to live, rather than just shouting louder in English and thinking that they'd understand and that that was enough.

I would have to agree, I am all for taking in refugees, but in return they should learn English. If I were to move to another country, even France, I would make a point of learning the main language of that country.

Immigrants should not be forced to learn the language of the new country, it is up to them and at the end of the day they are the ones facing difficulties if they don't make the effort.

Defintely, one should always learn the language of the adopted country. First of all for ones own benefit... It is always easier to have a relationship with the people of your new country if you have learned their language...
It is also easier when having to talk to the authorities (legal papers, medical attention, etc.).
And last but not least...it is no fun locking oneself inside...It is best to open up to the world, and speaking to people around you is the best way...

Absolutely. In this country, the europeans should have learned the language of the Indians, which was the language of the country when they came here

interior the european you may come over devoid of talking English as a member state of the united kingdom I settle for this, yet think of it may be for the two the earnings of the united kingdom and the immigrant for the guy to benefit English. i think of maximum folk fro the european do communicate English and people who don't finally end up doing low paid menial artwork which includes finding out on fruit - artwork that desires doing yet struggles to entice labour. From exterior the european basically extraordinarily experienced migrants could be allowed to immigrate into and artwork interior the united kingdom (different than Aussies, Kiwis and Canadians on a million year artwork visas) and component to that standards could be to talk English.

I think immigrants have enough going on when they first get here! But I think they'll struggle to settle in if they don't... But I understand it must be really daunting learning a whole new language...and not everyone has the opportunity to

I think it would be to everyone's benefit if all residents of the UK were helped and encouraged to learn English. A common language is crucial to mutual understanding.

I don't think people "should" learn any language. But not learning a language makes you miss whatever is available only in that language. I wish I knew all languages!
