I had a female Sheltie for years. I just had to have her put to sleep 3 days ago. She was 14 years old. I got her when she was a pup and here is my advice to you. First of all, mine was slightly independant. Very loving, but needed her own space too. A bed in the corner away from noise as a sanctuary worked. She loved to herd things, like other dogs, kids, birds. She loved to "work". They need frequent bathing and brushing for the shedding factor and to keep them fluffy and beautiful. They need regular exercise to keep them fit and their minds calm. They can become anxious and mischevious when they are puppies. They will reward you with lots of love, though. The best thing to do, is enroll him/her into an obedience class. It will help to train you and the dog. Good Luck!

I had a female shelty. She loved to go camping. They require a lot of exercise, mine would walk anywhere from 6 to 12 miles each day. They don't eat much and can use a low dose of heartworm medication.
