You cannot control another persons behavior. And not everyone gets cancer. It is nice that you are concerned, but she has to want to quit. You are best to leave it alone.

Since your Mother is old enough t make her own choices, there really isn't much you can do until SHE makes a decision to stop smoking. Sometimes adults are reluctant to take direction from their children, so you'll just have to love her the way she is. Your Mother will probably have to have a "shocking experience" to make her realize that her smoking is hurting her & hurting you too. My Mother smoked almost 90 cigarettes a day & I had to keep my bedroom door closed & the windows open in order to breath! She quit when she had no choice. The emphazema made it impossible for her to breath. I also ended up with breathing problems because I lived in a house with a smoker. Mom never got cancer, but she got everything else associated with heavy smoking. She was depressed & no one ever addressed this problem. She died depressed & sick & nothing I said or did could get her to see how much I loved her & wanted her to be happy. I guess the best thing you can do is to take care of yourself so you don't end up sick from her smoking. Good Luck, I know how hard it is to have a stubborn Mom!

You cannot do a thing but try to educate her on the dangers. However, nicotine is said to worse to quit than some hard drugs. I know the feeling, I grew up in a house where my Mom & Dad both smoked. And guess what 3 out of 4 of their children smoke as adults. I am the only one who does not.

May be you can try that angle. Ask her if she wants you to smoke. She will probably try to talk to out of it. Use her resaons to open the door to ask her how you can help her quit. There are gums, patches and even presciptions that a doctor can issue that will help.
