it has to do with family history, metabolism, and the sorts of things that people do when they aren't eating. if you get someone who just sits about on the couch and eats constantly, but never seems to gain a pound, they probably have the metabolism of a hummingbird. however, the people who eat very little and get fat most likely have a history in their family of weight issues, and thus probably have low metabolism. and, in case you didn't know, metabolism has to do with the speed at which food is changed into energy that is usable to do whatever that person desires. the higher your metabolism, the faster food is digested and converted into energy.

Activity level, genes, metabolism, hormones, height (tall people get to eat more than short), gender, age, and possibly things that happened to you in childhood. There is now evidence that what we feed our children set the stage for their metabolism later in life, even if they weren't fat as children.
