They chop down fig trees? Thought that was a traditional Eden fashion.

Because the Tree, in universal mythology, represents the life-principle. The World Tree is the axis mundi, the vertical dimension of reality--manifested in such archetypes as Yggdrasil the Cosmic Tree in whose branches hang the nine worlds in Asatru, or the One Tree of the Eden and crucifixion narratives in Christianity, the world-center-mountain tree of Nicholas Black Elk's vision (Lakota), the cosmic tree of circumpolar Shamanic religion, or the Bodhi tree of Buddhism--and it represents the sacrificial, liberatory, and transformative character of the mysteries of Life and Death. In the runes, the Birch tree is the Death Mystery, and the Ash tree the World-Revelation Mystery; such diverse world-saviors as Odin, Christ, and Buddha, to name only a very few, are associated with the World Tree symbol.

Both extremely secular and extremely pious versions of the impulse to destruction of the Life-Principle are manifested in the myth of the tree-feller. Evangelical Christianity, of the Fundamentalist/Rightist stripe, is actually very similar in its relationship to the world-sacredness problem (for evangelicals, the World is perverse and dirty, yet paradoxically the most worldly methods, such as political chicanery, are sanctified if they are for "godly" ends; this is the diametrically opposed view to the Apostolic Church's perspective in Jesus' lifetime) to the extremist dimension of some atheist thought, which is predicated not on a humanistic, but a radically anti-spiritual, worldview.

From one perspective, the world is a living Tree. From another, it is a "timber resource." The first perspective is biophilic, the second necrophilic. Hope this helps.

Don't worry, all of the murdered little trees who have accepted Tree Jesus into their hearts will go to Tree Heaven with their Tree God. All of the bad atheist Trees will be cast onto the Lake of Tree Fire...
