The FBI generally speaking maintains authority inside the US.The CIA however has been notoriously secretive about its dealings.Their activity has been sugested world wide.Now with the advent of the department of homeland defence,I think they have become more unified.

Traditionally the FBI worked soley in the United States and the CIA was an international intelligence gathering operation. However due the war on terrorism the two are both now doing work here as well as abroad.

The CIA gathers intelligence about events around the world, while the FBI is a police group that investigates crimes in the U.S. They're completely different.

One is called the Federal Bereau Of Investagation and the other is called the Central Intelligence Agency. (stupid answer). I think the CIA deals with alot more international cases and national security issues whereas the FBI deal with more internal cases such as serial killers and the like. Hope that helps, I'm not realy sure myself to be honest.

According to their charters, the FBI is supposed to have jurisdiction inside the US and the CIA is international - outside the US.
