You should be able to find eardrops at a pet or even grocery store. Put a few drops in, message the ear area and the ears will be clean! That way you don't have to worry about going too far in with a Q-tip while he squirms. I do this with my cats too.
Have a great day!!!

Your vet will have a liquid to squirt in, and you wipe it out with cotton balls.
I have heard to use a solution of Vodka (the cheapest you can
buy) and Boric Acid Powder. Mix enough BAP until it
doesn't dissolve any longer. I use an 8oz bottle for
the Vodka.
Also, here's Purple Magic Ear Stuff:
16 oz. bottle isopropyl alcohol
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Solution/powder
16 drops Gentian Violet Solution
Mix all ingredients in the alcohol bottle & shake. (You may need to pour out a small amount of alcohol so it will all fit.) Be sure and SHAKE WELL before each use to disperse the boric acid. It's easier to put in the dog's ears if you put some in a small squirt bottle. Treatment: Flood ear with solution & massage gently for 60 seconds and wipe with a tissue. Flood a second time and just wipe without massaging. The dog will shake the excess out. The Gentian Violet isn't supposed to stain, but be careful.
Schedule of treatment:
2 times per day for the first 2 weeks
1 time per day for the next 2 weeks
1 time per month thereafter
All ingredients are available at a pharmacy. Even despite the alcohol, dogs don't object to even the first treatment. The Boric Acid soothes the ear & the Gentian Violet is an anti-infection agent. The solution works well on any ear problem from mites to wax to canker. One vet reported a success rate of 95%-99% and felt those not successful had not been routine about it or had not done the treatment long enough. This solution is also effective for the treatment of fungus type infections on the feet & elsewhere on the dog, for cuts on dogs or people, and for hot spots. For EXTERNAL use only. Avoid getting in eyes.
Hope these help!!

Take the dog to a vet first. Most of the time here in the south the reddish build-up in the dogs ears is caused from ear mites. The vet will have a prescription solution to tend to this problem. Don't just go putting any solution in the ears. Left unattended can cause a myriad of problems from infection to damage of the ear canals. Hope your dog gets better.

I have a cocker spaniel and I clean his ears every week. On our first visit to the vet in Jan (2006) I got some solution and some little like gause towels.. for both it cost less then $15 and it is almost August and it still isn't gone. Anyhow I get him when he is sleeping because he is in a more still mood and I put some solution on one of the pad and I clean out using my fingers to get into all the wrinkles and such and repeat for the second ear. He doesn't like it but if I get him laying on his side and hold him down it is ok. Oh and my vet said it is not good enough to leave the solution in there you actually need to clean them out! :)

Get some ear cleaner from a pet store or get some recommended by a vet. Also a vet can probably show you the best way to hold a dog and clean their ears.

Try to do it when someone else is tummy rubbing. Use a rounded cotton pad with a little warm water and peroxide (diluted) and geltly wipe only as far as you can get. DO NOT USE Q TIPS or stick anything down the dogs ear canals. Be slow, gentle and try not to drip any of the liquid down the ears.

My vet had given me something at one point. Cannot remember what it was called. It was easy to use, just squirt it in the dog's ear, massage/rub around the ear for a few seconds and you're done. Sorry, can't remember what it was, dog lets me clean his ears now.

Canine Ear Care & How To Clean Your Dog's Ears
Ear care is vital for our dogs and probably one of the hardest spots for us to clean. Here are some tips for people that are new canine parents or for some that need extra ideas, woof!
Trobled Ears: If your dog has any complaints about his/her ears, here are some symptoms:
Vigorous head shaking
Ears standing crooked (on breeds such as German Shepherds, etc.)
Constant scratching of the ears
Rubbing head and ears on the ground and furniture
Red ears or off color ears
Excessive wax, off color wax (reddish brown, yellow, black specks etc.)
Foul odor
If any of these symptoms are present, do check it with his/her vet first. All ear infections are not caused by the same microorganism and treatment without proper examination is strictly guessing.
What not to do: Improper ear cleaning can result in cuts in ear canal, pain or even worst a ruptured eardrum. Please pay extra care when cleaning your dog's ears and do not insert sharp objects, q-tips etc. in your dog's ears. Also, please do not pour unknown solutions into the ear canal without consulting with your dog's vet.
Ear Cleaning: I suggest that all canine parents teach their happy tailed family members that ear check up is just a part of the grooming process and teach them to lie down quietly when asked.
You should be able to use a small flashlight to look in side your dogs ear and if you see anything out of the ordinary, you must contact your dog's veterinary. This is not something you should treat at home since you really do not know what it may be. Long term ear infections can cause deafness if they go untreated. I do not want to frighten you, however this way you & your canine friend will be safe rather than sorry.
Dogs get minor irritations due to allergies, bug bites, ruff play etc. You can use a mild ear cleaner or and oil based cleaner to wipe off dirt, grime, wax, soothe bug bites and minor scratches. If you see something irregular such as reddish brown wax contact your dogs' vet as it may be Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis).
Dab some gentle ear cleaner on a cotton ball and clean the outer ear (cartilage of the ear) with a cotton ball and also can wipe the ear lobe gently.
You may want to redo this process if ears are not clean.
If you are going to use a q-tip to clean in between the areas in the cartilage of the ear, do it gently and use it only on the outer ear. please ask your veterinarian on how to use a q-tip properly on your dog.
If your dog is nervous or upset about having his/her ears cleaned, keep your sessions short. Never yell or hit your dog. Any and all you do will be remembered by your dog next time you grab your grooming bag, cotton balls or that ear cleaner bottle. So go easy, repeat steps, calm down if you get frustrated and keep it short.
Once the cleaning is done, tell your dog that he/she was a "GOOD" baby and offer some kisses, hugs and some yummy treats. You will both be experts and wipe those ears with ease and move on to the better things in life real soon.
You know playing with the frisbee...tug of war...barking at the cats..

first you should put in a solution (such as you can buy at the pet store) because it softens everything up and makes it easier to get out once your dog finally lets you dig in there. just drop a few drops in his ears and massage the base of the ear (on both sides).
i have to hold my dog between my legs, with his head facing away from me, so i can grip him with my knees. he really hates it too! you have to be forceful for a few minutes to get the ears cleaned out, but you can make it up to them afterward with lots of treats!
use a q-tip as quickly as possible to remove it from all the folds inside his ears--but as with humans don't dig into his ear canals!
