I have been told that what I thought was a fungle infection under my nails is actually Psoriasis. My GP advised me that there is nothing that can be done about this as creams cannot be applied. I have Psoriasis on other area's of my body and apply steriod creams but they do not work, however, it's the nails that get me down as they look pretty awful. I only have two toenails and one on my hand which are not affected, because of the nature of the condition its just lifting the nails off of their beds.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, when I said GP, I actually meant the dermatologist. Maybe I need a second opinion!

I have had psoriasis for years now and the creams prescribed rarely, if ever, worked. The only thing I foud that helped is eating plently of fresh fruit and veg, cutting down on the take-aways and greasy food and getting some excercise. I also found that getting some sun helps alot (the winter months are much much worse). A female freind at work also has the same condition and it was her that put me on the the healthy food etc. I was sceptical at first but it really did make a difference after a couple of weeks.
Also, it tend to get worse in times when you feel stressed or depressed so try and stay upbeat about things (easier said than done with dry flaky skin everywhere!).
Hope this helps.

I have had psoriasis since I was in 13 and i am now 30 something and have never heard of it under the nails!!!
Go to a dermatologist... My sister-in-law as psoriasis on about 95% of her body and she takes injections once a month!!
It really is incredible how well the injections clear it up but there are many side affects and dangers of the medication that is why it is only prescribed for people with severe psoriasis.. Best to go and consult a dermatologist a GP is only there for a so called "Quick Fix" whereas a dermatologist will be more detailed with treatment!!
Good Luck!!

I had a 13 year history of psoriasis, though I was in good health otherwise. But these severe large, thick and scaly excoriated plaques on my neck, ears, trunk and limbs ruined the way I was leading my life. I would be with red, inflamed itchy skin for most part of the year and these silvery scales would seem to be erupting without any reason. To make matters worse, blisters would appear over already red and itching skin. It was living hell.
I was treated with various options but nothing seemed to be working. Some of the treatments that I underwent in this depressing period of 13 years included tar preparation, tropical steroids and anthralin. I was also given light therapy many times but everything I tried would give me temporary relief.
And soon, after a few days I would be plagued with the situation again. In one of those moments when I was completely lost I stumbled upon this website just by chance. I read it and felt that as if someone had put the story my life on this web page. I was thoroughly convinced that if ANYONE can cure me of condition, it would be you.
And was I right, or what. I started recovering within 3 days of starting this treatment. Something that had become a painful part of me for 13 years was actually getting healed! My ears are healed and my neck is smooth again!. I am a month into the treatment and I have never felt better in my life!

I was also told by my doctor that there is nothing that can be done for psoriasis under the nails, I ave ad it since i was about 9yrs old and am now 42 and it is only recently that it as started to be a problem under my nails, i ave also been told that the constant pain in my knee and other joints is because of psoriasis on my joints something else i did not know. I tend to keep my nails short as like you say they lift from the nailbed and ave on more than one occasion ave caught them and pulled them off quite far down. I ave found that they seem a little better when i use my coaltar (polytar) shampoo as it gets under the nails when i shampoo.

My hubby has psoriasis, his advice is, get a referral to a dermatologist as most GPs don't have a clue about psoriasis.

I know there are several vaccine for Psoriasis, but I don't know if they have been approved or are still in clinical trials.
Can you get to one of the Mayo Clinics listed in the Website below? They might have some other options. I wish I had more info for you. Sorry. I have to run.

I'm surprised what your GP said. Ask to be referred to a consultant. There are far more effective creams that can be applied nowadays for specific areas of the body.
Sunlight removes all mine so during summer I am scale free.
