Same reason they give them a complete physical before they execute them. Want to make sure they are perfectly healthy before they die. And yes, I am an advocate of the death penalty. It does seem a bit ridiculous tho.

To not do so would be considered cruel and unusual punishment and could be grounds for calling the whole thing off. They may be on death row, but they still have their rights.
