You could trim their hair. I have cats with relatively short hair but the shedding was becoming a problem, even with grooming (though it does help!). So I took my two oldest cats (out of 4) and shaved them relatively close to the skin. It was amazing that not only did it help shedding, but they began acting healthier and younger. (These cats are 12 and 10)

If they're a long haired cat groom them with a comb and a brush at least probably ever other day to prevent knots and tangles in the fur. You can also wash the cat, I tried washing my cat for the same problem and it only lasted a few days. Just continue to bursh them with a clean brush and you should be okay.=)

Brush them allot, I mean allot! Some breeds are just more prone to shedding more than others. My orange cat sheds more than my black or long haired cat does! It also may have to do with the food you feed them, good quality food can help aleviate the problem as well, check with the VET....

Brush Them once of twice a week for a half an hour or more
Feed them lots of healthy stuff

Groom them at least once a week and make sure they are eating well and getting all the nutrients they need for a good coat.
