Depending on the state you live in you have to go to court to have you name legally changed. They will want to know why though...and if you change your name your previous name will still show up on background checks, etc, due to your social security number staying the same.

Well, you need to go to the courts to get the legal name change, then you go to vital records to amend your birth certificate.
