I have a parakeet. Beautiful bird. His nails are growing the opposite way. Instead of curling around the perch his nails stick straight out or even up. Poor thing. I don't know what to do.

I have 4 parakeets myself and I know what you mean. I believe your parakeet just needs a trim. I suggest that you purchase a bird nail cutter. They are very inexpensive. I suggest you visit Petsmart and buy one. It usually costs 7 to 10 dollars. It's very worth it. Or you can buy a cover for a perch. It feels very rough like sandpaper, so when your parakeet perches on it , it's nail get trimmed. This way you wouldn't have to handle your parakeet. Petsmart also sell these perch covers for about 3 to 5 dollars for a 3 pack. I hope I can help!!!! Good luck with your parakeet!!!

I believe it may just need a trim, also to prevent the nails from getting too long and thus, being forced straight or even up, you can buy a kind of sand paper sheet from pet stores and line the bottom of the cage in it. it will gently file the nails down and hopefully prevent the problem in the future! Good luck!

Either his nails need to be trimmed or he isn't on the perch a lot and is on the bottom of the cage a lot, making the nails go straight.

I'm not a bird person, but try taking him to a vet that sees birds, and get him looked at, he may only need a nail trim to correct the problem.

Good luck.
