I Would say a nice local wine try wine tasting at a local wine celler to find out which taste the best let your heart decide

It really depends on what you are serving. Red or white wines go with different foods.
However, I like the German Spatlese (schpate-lace). It's a sweet, slightly sparking white, mostly served as a desert wine, but if you're not snooty, it doesn't make a difference.
Other good whites are Chardonays and Zinfandels (go for the ones with a more pink than yellow tinge).
Merlot is a good red. And, if you can find it, a true Zinfandel (which is actually a red). With reds, I find that price does make a difference.
Oh, and you serve red wines with heavy meals and white wines with light meals.

Cabernet Sauvignon, a nice Margot, Chateau Trindon,
Robert Mondavi makes a nice inexpensive table wine.

My fave is La Crema Pinot Noir. It's very smooth and about $20 a bottle.

If it is a red meat, a nice pinot noir works well. For fish or chicken pinot grigio or chardonnay are good bets.
