Researchers have found that the majority of people with Multiple Personalities (otherwise known as Dissociative Identity Disorder- DID) were sexually abused as children. When they were in the process of being abused, they dissociated (think of it as an out of body experience) so they could avoid coping with the experience. Kind of like a "This isn't happening to me" mentality. Over time, this dissociation grows, they begin to use it more and more to cope with stressors, leading to DID.

they form as a coping mechanism for Horrible physical, sexual, and/or mental abuse usually beginning in childhood.
Most people think that there exists 3 or 4, or 5 personalities in one person ( like the movies) when in actuality there can be as many as 100.

Multiple Personality Disorder is very interesting, check it out on wikipedia!

Usually an alternate personality emerges in the event of abuse or trauma to deal with the situation that the original personality cannot.

A good movie that illustrates this is "Sybill" portrayed by Sally Field in 1976 and based on the life of Shirley Mason, which is readily available on DVD many places. There is also a re-make in the works.

psychotic break ususally caused by a truama caused in childhood but can also happen in adult hood. Basically, the mind can't comprehend what it has expereinced and based on the person, a person can switch to a created personality which symbolizes the need that they never had when the trauma occured. (ex. a tough biker dude to protect the innocent child inside them which has been hurt before)
