Ok i'm not grasping the concept yet, people complain about mexicans not wanting to assimilate. It seems that mexicans are the only ones they seem to talk about, well what about korea town, china town, lillte habana and other ethnic towns that have street signs, store signs, and other stuff written in that cultures native language, why is no one quick to point to them and make them assimilate by making them put everything in english? Or am I just missing a point here?

I only agree with assimilation to the language, reading, and writing part for Mexicans. As for anybody else who was not indigenous to this country they should assimilate. It's kind of hard to take the Mexican heritage out of the United States. Actually, it's impossible being that a majority of the United States was Mexico not too long ago, and there are too many evidences of that. Buildings, architecture, indigenous Mexican people that were here before the war, Native Americans that use to be Mexican Indians before the war, certain foods, etc. These are things that were NOT brought here, they were already here. Mexico is part of our history, and erasing that fact is erasing our American history. To all who deny the Mexican culture in America are lying to themselves.

I've seen a lot of people talking about IMMIGRANTS assimilating. However, studies have indicated that 80% of Europeans emigrating to a new country think they should learn the language and culture of the new country, whereas the percentage is much lower for those emigrating from Latin America. In addition, there are many more here from Latin America, so the impact is more noticeable.

To be honest, I don't think I could necessarily tell an El Salvadorean from a Mexican just by looking at them, and I don't think most of the other anti-illegals on here can either.

No, I think you have a good grasp on the situation. This country was the "Great American Melting Pot". Everyone from everywhere could come here and make a life for themselves. They would adopt the ways of their new home and be welcome. They could keep aspects of their heritage that made life interesting and they could share with their neighbors (who could also be from anywhere).

The new (liberal) idea is the great American salad bowl. Anyone can come here and keep the entire concept of their homeland intact. They don't have to adopt any ways of their foster homeland. They can live like they did wherever they came from. (kind of makes you wonder why they would leave in the first place) There are instances where their beliefs are in direct contrast to the laws of this country.

If you do not want to assimilate into the American culture, do not come here. It cannot be stated any simpler.

***marci is off he evr lovin rocker!***
***GOKART put it nicely again.

Personally, while I definately have a personal reason to resent some Mexicans this isn't a cultural problem it is about ILLEGALS coming to AMERICA and then telling us to adapt to them while they get wellfare, healthcare, housing, and AMERICANS can't.At least not too many where I live.
WE DON'T COUNT IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!
My point is if we cannot take care of and feed, clothe, house, get medical treatment for our own poor and homeless why in the heck should we be allowing people from other countries in here to take care of them and putting them ahead of our own.
This isn't about the ancestors who immigrated 100 years ago.
The laws are very different now and those that scream "we were all that way once" need a new party line.
I have no problem with any of them coming here through legal channels and supporting themselves and being proud of their heritage.I have a prblem with them sneaking in here, stealing us blind while we have to sit back and let them and keep handing them more because they obviously need it more than we do.After all WE are the ones who worked hard to get these things but gee we should just let the ILLEGALS have it because they need it more!

***actually MARCI it is an ILLEGAL issue and your sorry so called *** should go back to the *** ifyou can't handle it!
Like I said the first time it isn't just about the Mexicans and your little theory about the lower states is shot to hell since it is AMERICA now.We didn't steal it.There was this little thing called a WAR!
If you are going to live in AMERICA not Mexico,Korea,Italy or anywhere else then hell yes you should learn English. Why would you not wan to tobe able to communicate in the country you chose to come to?That is just illogical.AS is have said several times now assimilation is not about giving up your heritage or your beliefs or anything of the kind.It is adapting to your chosen surroundings.
If they want to come here then hell yes they need to Adapt, not give up who they are but accept the fact THEY CAME HERE We didn't drag them kicking and screaming and we sure as hell didn't send them an ingraved invitation.
You're DAMNSTRAIGHT this is an ILLEGALS issue no matter what spin you choose to put on it honey!

It's funny how people who aren't even indigenous to this country want us to assimilate. How about those certain people assimilating to what the real, indigenous people of this country want? That's just a hypothetical question. If I don't want to adjust to the ways of people who came here just to pillage, extinguish, and rape the so-called "savage creatures" of this land, I certainly do not have to. Don't these ignoramuses realize most of this country, for example, California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, etc., was Spanish speaking, and Mexico before this was ever the United States? The border between the United States and Mexico is a bleeding wound that will never heal. Get over it people! This country is a melting pot, and does not belong to just one way of life.

Marci sounds like she needs to take a pill.
cme calm down!

Why is the question only targeting Mexicans?
We would like all immigrant to appreciate AMERICA.We aren't asking them to give up their culture or heritage or whatever some people here want to call it.
We are expected to put all documents in their languages so they might understand them.
WHY?
If you cannot read or speak English why should we bother with you?
WE are expected to assimilate in their country. We are expected to know the language and laws of whichever country we go whether as a visitor or if we move there. We are not allowed to plead ignorance of their ways .Why should we tolerate their ignorance-no matter how false it is?

How many illegal chinese immigrants are there in america today? A sum that pales in comparison to that from Mexico.
Face it lady, Mexico's got Serious Problems That They Can't/Won't Solve For Themselves. That's why they're coming, at the rate of 2000 a DAY, 1-way trip, at that. High levels of stupidity and inaction, here...nice try with the comparison, though, and it's good to point out that other nations' populations would like to move to america, too, but the major difference is it's a lot harder for them to swim to america than it is for people from mexico...

When most legal immigrants are dealing with folks who are not part of their native group, they try to speak English, and make serious attempts to learn.

When a group expects that the people who live here need to change to accommodate them, rather than the newcomers adapting to the language and customs here, then there is a problem.

You can speak any language you want with folks that also speak that language, the problem comes when you demand that others adapt to you, when you are the one who chose to come here!!

The point is you need to learn English to prosper in the USA, and should not expect the privileges that this great country offers if you are unwilling to learn to communicate in the standard language.

Hola Chica,
well, I think it's just easy to point the finger at Mexicanos because they are the largest immigrant group. You're correct, many, many groups of foreigners are not assimilating.
