it would be shallower as their body mass would not be there

The question is wrong because the ocean would be shallower without sponges. If you get out of a bath the water level goes down not up!

Multiply the total number of sponges by the density of the oceans and subtract about 0.01% to allow for evaporation. Add the number of ships that deposit waste products into the ocean and multiply that by 1.4682. Divide any remaining answer by itself and if the answer is 1 then you've got it right.

That would depend on what the total volume of all the sponges are. Sea sponges do not actually soak up the water.

Are you serious? Sea sponges aren't like sponges that you buy at the store. You need to quite watching Sponge Bob!

I don't think that in relative terms there'd be a huge amount of difference - they're only a couple of cell layers thick anyway and though they don't "soak up" the sea water as you'd normally think the majority of the volume they appear to take up IS sea water. There'd be a slight decrease in volume of the ocean if they were all removed but not huge.

it's not very deep at the moment when you think about it, if you take everything out of the seas and oceans you can walk across it as it will only be a few feet deep.
