Irradiation works very well. Short of that, most fresh fruit lasts about 6 days in our home. Try buying in smaller quantities and making it a point to eat the fruit. It often goes bad when we forget it is there.

You may be doing nothing really wrong it could be the quality of the fruit and vegetables partly to blame.
I personally store most of my fruit and vegetables in the fridge, especially during the warmer months. Apart from bananas which should always be kept at room temperature.
Manage to keep my fruit and vegetables fresh for about a week this way although can take up some room in the fridge.
To make storage easy fruits such as melons, pineapples and mangoes I prepare ready to eat and store in contains so ready to eat anytime.
I always remove plastic bags and wrappers as these tend to make produce sweat and therefore deteriorate faster.
If you have a dry, dark cool place store your potatoes and vegetables out there.
In winter months I keep all my vegetables in an outside storage place and they keep for at least one week.
Hope this helps.

fruits(dry fruits like apple, orange, pear, guava n some others) can be keep outside.. but it would be better if u put the vegetables(like leafy vege, tomato, carrot n even onions) in the fridge.. it will last abit longer then usual.. N as for some fruits like watermelon, grapes, papaya n others... as for bananas cant last long u can put it in a plastic n leave it on the counter.. Refrigerate ripe plums for up to three days. Ripen hard plums by placing several in a loosely closed paper bag and leaving them at room temperature for a day or two.

Well as far as bananas you should buy them when they are a little green almost yellow....if they are firm they will last for about a week. As far as plums or any other fruit take them out of the plastic bag and refrigerate them. One more thing if your fruit is going that fast you must be buying them when the are very ripe....feel your fruit to make sure that they are firm before buying. They should last much longer. Oh one more thing especially in the summer you should never leave food (fruit) in plastic bags unrefrigerated moisture causes things to go bad very quickly.

I put My fruit in a paper bag and not plastic and did you know that if you put an apple into a bag of potatoes will keep them from getting those small white eyes all over them most fruit only lasts 7 days so you should bye in smaller quality's if its just you.
