Not really. You will still have to pay for the car to be shipped over. The embargo taxes are what makes the foreign cars so expensive.

Actually it is more expensive.

First of all the difference in the economy will make the price of the car higher. All things equal, the Germans pay about 35% more for cars than we do. Also consider that the exchange rate of the dollar against their currency will end up adding to the bottom line price.

Secondly you will have to pay for shipping and crate rental. Once the car hits the dock you will have to be prepared to pay import taxes on the vehicle and get it through US customs which is never cheap or easy.

Third, you will have to do the necessary conversions in order to make the car road worthy in the US. That means replacing all of the windows with DOT safety glass, changing out the license plate brackets to fit US license plates, and replacing the bulbs in the headlights and tail lights so that they meet USDOT safety standards.

Also consider that there are BMW factories right here in the US so there really is no advantage to purchasing the car in Germany.

No because once you add the costs for shipping, taxes and duties and the time and effort to oversee such a difficult endeavour the total will likely be higher that buying one localy. Keep in mind that all the efforts that you undertake in getting one car from there to here - the importer will do for thousands of cars and therefore can spread some of the costs over a large number of cars thus lowering the per car cost.

Yes, it is cheaper to go to Germany and buy the BMW. However, ask yourself where you live, the shipping fees, any taxes to pay on the way to ______________? Go to the dealer first, look for the same model BMW. Whichever bids the lowest, I'll go for that one, whether it is traveling to Germany or going to the dealership. Do your research.
