I think it's both...
One is to challenge people to question some of their more nasty and illogical beliefs.
I occasionally end up getting a little angry because of some of the really aggressive and hostile posts, and so end up saying things I should probably not say (and don't necessarily think). I ended up here in Religion and Spirituality out of frustration at answers turning up in Biology, and getting picked as Best Answers despite complete absence of scientific content.
Unfortunately, I'm not Gandhi and don't feel like turning the other cheek.
Gandhi, I think, would have mixed feelings about this site.
I think he would find its original ethos and spirit laudable - the spread of knowledge and wisdom.
However, I think he would abhor the vitriol and inanity contained within, and more specifically I think the fact that in areas like religion and spirituality where factual answers are not generally sought Yahoo Answers becomes essentially a talking shop. "You should be the change you wish to see".

I think its got to be tough to have a sword fight on Yahoo!. However, I think most atheist are hear to have a little fun with the radicals that seem to be here. At least thats what I do. I think Ghandi would probably wonder what the hell was going on.

I come to point out the idiocy of those who want to force others to accept their false beliefs .
Gandhi was a pacifist. Many atheists are pacifists as well. If I am at work or in some gathering and people start talking about religion, I usually say nothing. It's not for me to change what they believe. But when some sanctimonious goddite gets on here and spews a vitriolic sermon, then calls it a question by tacking on a "?" at the end, then yes, I'm going to answer that "question".

Well, if you see attitudes as swords, I would say that many come bearing swords. Ghandi would probably cry over all this.

Most atheists are very peaceful, which is ironic. People of religion should be more peaceful than they are. Maybe if everyone was an atheists there wouldn't be wars?

Good question. Many seem to post questions and answers merely to antagonize. Others seem to be genuinely curious as to why someone would believe in a particular religion. It just strikes me as odd that someone who doesn't believe in something would spend so much time thinking and talking about that in which he does not believe. I don't believe in fairies, but I also don't waste a lot of time posting statements to disprove their existence.

There are radical fundamentalist terrorists on both sides. Look at all of the atheists blowing up Churches and Christian schools.
