John is the English form of the Latin-Greek name "Johannes".
Iohannes is the Greek form of the Hebrew name "Yochanan", which means (in Hebrew) "god is gracious" or "god have mercy".

Yo- one of god's many names and references in the bible.
Chanan- comes from the word "chen" (grace) but probably means "to deal kindly", or "to have mercy" in this case.

John is written in Hebrew like this: ג'ון
and Yochanan, is like this: יוחנן

As the others here have said, it means Favoured of God, or God's Grace. It is a statement that the one so named was well blessed by God and in God's favour.

Yes, I read somewhere that it's (more or less!) jo-hannou (I think I made it Greek, sorry).

But the Hebrew original means "God's grace" or "gift of God".
