In Matt he is saying that some in the family will accept his message and some won't and it will cause division within a family. On one hand Jesus gives us peace with God over our sins and personal relationship with God but on the other most of the people in the world do not want God in their lives and even less want God to tell them how they should live.
Just like the beggar that wants money or food. If you give him something, he is happy. But if you suggest that you can help him get a job, or that he should he will not like it. The guys that hold up the signs "will work for food" have you ever offered them a job around your house?? Try it sometime and see how many will really work..

The word "Sword" in the Bible is in regards to the Word of God. The Book of Ephesians tells us to put on the full armour of God on and one part of the armour is the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Knowing the Word of God and doing what it says can produce the same effect as the sword - causing division among good and evil - splitting apart holiness from godlessness and separting the people of God from Satan's followers. The word of God can make the demons flee if you know how to use the Bible correctly - misuse it and you have got problems. Jesus is our Peace who has broken down every wall - but He also wants evil purged out of the Earth. Some evil just doesn't vanish with non-violent methods. There are times the best thing to do is to kill and not reason with the enemy. Read through the Old Testament about when the Hebrews warred against many nations because God could not stand or tolerate the evil among the pagan nations. He had the Hebrews completely annhiliate evil nations - there was no peace talk or trying to reason with the terrorist of that time. God knew that those individuals would not change their ways. So he had them destroyed by the sword literally speaking. The Word of God teaches that God does not change, which means that God is still against pagan nations and he still wants to purge evil out. The first method would be reasoning but if that doesn't work, bring in the sword.

This is an interesting passage. There are two schools of thought I'm aware of. The first is that the sword is metaphorical such as you suggested, and is simply a recognition that the message would cause division even among families.

The second school thinks this passage is a leftover from the original message of rebellion against Rome that was almost completely extracted from later revisions.

I suppose they might both be right.

Look at verse 33,"But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Christ is using a sword, figuritivly, "as a way to sever, which in the KJV the word "variance" in verse 35 means", anything that we put more importantance than God. He's not going to break up marriages or familys to do this, but He will bring trials and tribulations if we dont first listen to the Holy Spirit as He tells us to put Him first and if we ignore his voice then He will become more forcful little by little until we finally decide to give in or totally reject Him. Its very hard to put a being that you cant see or hear above your family of whom you can love and do all these things to and also recieve them back. But He didnt leave exceptions, and the truth is that we dont understand what happend or how much it means orwhat was actually done at the cross to its fullest, cause if we understood it completly then it would radically change our lives other than just saving us.

You're referring to the quote where he says he came not to bring peace, but a sword, right?

You're right, he's not referring to real violence, he's referring to the fact that his message should shock and disturb us, make us really think about how difficult it is to do what he's asking of us.

His message, his truth would cause division, because some will accept it and some will not. Even in the family. Yes, the use of the word is expressional here.

He was talking about his word the New Testament. How some will accept and others will not.

In some Families not everyone believes in the New Testament.
So they don't understand why you have changed and may try and be an obstacle in your faith in God.

I like that u used Jesus of Nazereth and not Christ. I dont think he said it, I think the scribe that wrote it added it, because Jesus tought, and spoke different from how that sounds, it seems like hes forcing something on us, and he didnt teach like that in the earlier verses

It's the sword of division, causing rift between believers and unbelievers.

I think you're confusing sword with 'sword' if you know what I mean.
