I'm thinking of getting a cat, but I've heard that they carry lethal diseases that can affect humans especially women. Is this true for all cats? What are the diseases and how can they be prevented? I've had dogs all my life but not cats, so I have no idea about the issues that they bring. Thanks for your answers.

You must be thinking of toxoplasmosis. The only real issue with that is pregnant women are advised not to clean litter boxes. There really are no diseases that cats get that are *lethal* to humans. You might pick up ringworm but that's about it. There are some cat-to-cat diseases like FIV, but it does not affect humans.

Any cat from a reputable shelter or breeder will have had all of his or her shots, and will have been checked out by a vet. You should really have no problem. Kitties make great pets, good luck to you!

Most of it is blown out of proportion!!! Yes, cats can carry toxoplasmosis. If you are pregnant, do not scoop the litter. That is it.
I have been a vet tech for 17 years and have ALWAYS had cats. I had them and worked daily with the through three pregnancies. There is no reason to avoid the cat while you are pregnant, just avoid the litterbox or wear a mask while you are scooping.

Other than that, the same things that dogs carry, intestional parasites,rabies....those things are all the same for dogs and cats.

There are parasites and micro organism that some cats can carry of their feces that human beings can come into touch with, yet while that cat has continually been an indoor cat with their photos and recurring visits to the vet then there is very much less risk. some parasites count on a cat with the intention to stay, because of the fact they stay to tell the tale a cycle. case in point a cat can eat some thing that the parasite lives in, then the parasite is going interior the path of the cats digestive device and out, and yet another service ought to p.c.. it up from the feces and the parasite lives in them till it reaches the residing ingredient the cat ate. Many different issues that human beings are plagued via are additionally carried via particularly any mammal, so no longer basically cats.

Don't listen to these idiots. No, cats do not have diseases that affect humans. They can spread diseases to eachother -- just like we can spread diseases to eachother but not to cats. Rabies can be transferred, but if you keep your cat inside, they can't get it because they have to be bit by an affected animal.

As long as you don't play in the feces of other animals you should be fine. Cats carry diseases that are communicable between them. Some other species my acquire worms if the cat was not dewormed but that is from the synonomous sniffing.

toxoplasmosis (sp?) pregnant women shouldn't do litter box duty. and scratch cat disease are pretty much the only two that could possiably be transfered from cat to human. most other things can't be transfered from human to cat or cat to human. get a cat you will be happy you did.
