I'm curious to find anyone that has been in an accident and has survived despite being unrestrained, especially if you don't have an airbag

yes, when I was fifteen, i was riding in the middle of a little truck with no seatbelt. we went flying off a cliff in California, and the only thing that saved us was that a small tree got stuck in between the tire and the fender. if the tree hadn't been there, we would have all died, because it was a cliff. it was horrifying. and it was so fragile that we all climbed out very carefully, hoping that the truck wouldn't move and then fall the rest of the way while we were in it! i was slammed into the windshield, but i survived.

When I was 16 I totaled my car. It flipped like 4 times and threw me all around before throwing me out. I was not wearing a seatbelt and there was no airbag. It was an 87 model car and I don't think they even made them with airbags then. I am lucky to have survived. I wasn't hurt all that bad. The worst think was I had to get over 100 stitches in my leg. I guess the glass cut it from the back window I went out of. It was the most scary thing ever. You really do see your life flash before your. Last year I was in a wreck that ended up totaling a 2002 Ford Explorer. I was wearing my seatbelt and came out with no injuries at all. I guess when it is your time to go, then it doesn't matter.

I survived an accident BECAUSE I was unrestrained. Front tire blew out, lost control and hit a ditch, car rolled twice. I was thrown to the passenger side. The roof on the driver side was caved in to the seat. Walked away without a scratch.

3 weeks ago.. there was a car full of people driving drunk and it crashed. 2 were my cousins, and 3 were friends. 4 of those people died. The boy that survived was in the front passenger seat not wearing a seatbelt. There were no airbags.

The other 4 were not wearing seatbelts either. They're causes of death were various. 2 were thrown through the windshield. The driver broke his breast bone on the steering wheel and died a few days later.. from this accident.. you will see the normal statistics.

4 out of 5 people not wearing a seat belt in a crash will die.

I did. As a child. However... car seats weren't used commonly at the time, they certainly weren't the law (as are carseats and seatbelts now) and while I survived, I got a huge gash on my chin that I wouldn't have if I'd been in a seatbelt or carseat.

It's not just a matter of surviving. You have to add in there risk for injury plus the fact that being without a seatbelt is illegal now. If you're contemplating suicide and wondering if that would be a way to do it, chances are you'd only maim yourself... just as an aside....

Yes, infact I have been in 3. I am not bragging, and I now wear a seat belt all the time even if I am not driving.

1) my mom was driving a green gremlin and we slammed into the back of a pick-up truck.

2) my friend was driving and I was reaching in the back seat to get a sandwich out of the cooler. We were hit from the back!

3) I was driving and the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes cause he thought the school kids were going to come into the street. He obviously was not looking ahead or he would have not been so caught up in what they were doing.

In 1986 I wrecked my Toyota Corolla. It rolled 4 times before right ing itself. I wasn't belted in and there were no airbags at the time. They had just started ticketing for not useing your belt. I didn't get a ticket because the way the other car hit me I'd have died if I'd used my belt. I'd have been trapped in my seat and squashed like a bug. Instead I had a mild concousion and a dislocated pelvis.

3 high speed roll overs. A jeep once rear ended us at a stop light. He had to be doing 45. Rear ended again in traffic 4 car pile up. That was bad. Never once went to hospital. Haven't been in an accident since I started wearing a seat belt. In my view seat belts are lucky.

Many years ago I was in a car accident in Scotland. We
slammed corner to corner into a truck.

I was asleep in the backseat of the car without a seatbelt.
I ended up with a "fractured ascetablum" (broken socket).

My father was in the front left seat sustained multiple
skull injuries and died from it 4 days later. (Unbelted)

My mother was driving in the front right seat (Belted) and
injuired her eye - which mostly recovered.

According to the police, there was no question that the
reason my father died and my mother did not was due
to the seat belts.

I ddn't die because I was young and relaxed (as I said, asleep).

Not me personally, but a friend of mine survived. She was sitting on the middle console of the truck and the driver was drunk (idiots) and when they had the wreck she was thrown through the very back window of the truck. She was lucky to be alive, but she spent the next 6 months with a metal halo bolted into her head since her neck and spine were so serverly damaged.
