I want to do it from both sides of my family. My dad's grandfather came from Wales and he moved to South Africa in probably the late 1890's early 1900's (I wouldn't be able to do any search in S.A. because I don't live there anymore). And my mom's dad's family is Scottish, but they never lived to tell anyone a tale. What can I do to go about all of this? Thank you for any help!

Your best bet is, believe it or not, the Mormon Church. They have a huge repository of all sorts of geneological info that they will share with you, free of charge. You do not have to be a Mormon. You obviously have computer access - try something along the lines of "Church of Latter Day Saints-Geneology-Search Ancestry."
It sure beats driving around the country looking through individual records.
I actually retrieved my great-great-great...grandfather's mustering out pay slip from the Revolutionary War from this site. And he was Pennsylvania Militia, not even regular army. Give it a try - at the very least it will give you somewhere to start.
Warning: You'll get hooked and find yourself on the 'net 24/7.
Good luck!!

If you have someones full name, a birthdate would help a lot too and a town, you should be able to trace your family. There are many genealogy sites online, that may be a good place to start. There are birth records, death records, marriage records, etc., that you can search. Good luck with your search, you will find it very interesting and feel closer to your ancestors. I did a family search and went to where my grandfathers family came from in Italy. I met his sisters daughter, her husband and their children. They showed me Rome, brought me home to eat a feast and it was the trip of a lifetime!

With genetics I can hint my ancestry to quite a lot of tribes that got here from relevant asia. But as for identified spouse and children I can hint them again a couple of generations most effective. I have a British buddy who can hint a identified ancestor from 1000 years in the past utilising the domesday publication.

Automated Genealogy,com
One World Tree
Cyndi's List

Look in your phone book for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many have a Family History Centre attached for public use, so call and find out the opening hours of your nearest centre. The centre will have a Family History Specialist who can advise you, and they have many free books about starting off researching your family history, including booklets about how to trace your ancestry in other countries (I have the one about Wales). They also have microfische of all the censuses and many other useful resources, including things like pedigree charts to write it all down on.

I have researched my family history in this way and discovered that I am related to Florence Nightingale and Charles Spurgeon.

First start by getting together all the information you can from both sides of your family,The more info you have the better, but just about anything will do. For instance, you should have first name, middle name, last name, year they were born, country they were born in, year they died, country they died in.Then even try an internet search. That is all i can help with .

Go to any Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse, family ancestry building or website and they will help you get started for free and with no obligation. That is how I got started. So Easy and they are really helpful. All the old ladies do that in their free time.

Write the word Ancestry on a sheet of paper using a black magic marker, then take another sheet of paper and place it over the top of that one, then using a #2 pencil begin tracing the word;) LOL

Friends Reunited do a good one. It also allows you to search for members of your family. People ( with your permission ) can also see your family tree and might be able to help with it. I put down my family name and with the help of others, have added 17 people already!
Try it!

There are some genealogy sites online. Do a google search for both of their names, and see what comes up.
