Yes, Bamboo is a PLANT. It belongs to grass family of Monocotyledonous plants.(Gramineae or Poaceae family are the other names.)

Bambusa , Dendrocalamus are the well known genera of bamboo.

Dendrocalamus giganteus is , perhaps the biggest bamboo known to mankind.

It has many commercial applications. Dwarf varieties are grown as Bonsai plants .

Sugar cane, Corn, Rice, wheat and all other cereals are the closest relatives of Bamboo as all of them hail from the same family.
The Lawn grass is no exception!

Bamboo was used as a form of Chinese torture, as bamboo grows through anything, so too human flesh. It is also one of the fastest growing plants, 1 meter in a day has been recorded.

Well, in the American Southeast, the most common bamboo is actually an alien invader, the "oh isn't that pretty" frontline infiltrator. Then WHAM- kudzu moves in and eats your house....
