Dog Breeds: Poodle
Lively, energetic and friendly the Poodle needs continuous and involved dog training to avoid it becoming rebellious and naughty.
This breed enjoys playing and walks and it is especially important for the larger varieties to get plenty of regular time outdoors. Though Poodles do well in apartments if they are not give regular exercise they will quickly become unruly and naughty.

The smartest of the dog breeds is the Border Collie. These dogs, however, are easily bored and can get into trouble if they are not given enough to do. They are used for rounding up cattle and sheep and if there are children nearby they can become aggressive when the children run because of their natural instinct to herd them.
I don't know much about the Afghan Hound but I once read in a book that they are the least intelligent of the dog breeds.

Golden Retrievers are the best breed ever!!!! So smart, and friendly, and loyal, and good with kids, too. If you're looking for something smaller, try a Bichon or a Maltese. They are also friendly, and often used as therapy dogs, because of being so smart and patient.

PS: Jack Russells are one of the most hyper dogs you can get!

There is a new cossbreed of dog called a Labrodoodle. Its a cross between a Lab and a Standard Poodle. They are great dogs, the best of both worlds, smart and no shedding. They are kind of expensive though.

Best bet. Get in contact with your local rescue. Most rescues foster in their homes. Offer to foster for them the one you want will come along. The one that is perfect for you and your family and your current golden. No one breed is smarter than the other. Border collies are supposed to be one of the smartest but mine seems to have had a lack of oxegen to the brain during birth or something. Rescues are usually very appreciative too. Most of them seem to know its better with you than where they were.

depends on what kind of working you want to do. I'm partial to border collies - have several of them. They are "busy" dogs but good ones are not hyper.
spaniels are good dogs; as are several of the herding and working breeds. The individual means a lot - there's good and bad in all breeds.

well i can only speak from experience here....border collie's are too smart for their own good, if not constantly stimulated, they will destroy your house. goldens are great , but if you want some variety http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm should help . it will ask you questions to determine what breed is most compatible with your needs. large dogs can be good also--st. bernards and my favorite newfoundlands can be trained as a draft dog, to pull carts and newfies also love water and can be trained to do water rescue..just a few suggestions..enjoy your search

Good Luck... you're not going to find a smart dog that isn't hyper!
Your best bet is a Chow! they're hyper at 1st, but calm down after thier 1st heat.
And if you want a good breed of chow... expect to pay at least 1,800

Go for the flatcoat. Much more unusual breed than a golden and they have great personalities.
