Yes, I have had good luck with used speakers. Here are a few tips:
Buy from a person who is an "audiophile" ie someone who is really into pure music and is maybe upgrading, stay away from the college grad who is 'getting rid' of his speakers. don't buy from Garage sales... no self respecting audiophile puts his speakers in the garage :)
Ebay is a good source too
stick to the mid range to higher end speakers... RBH, Atlantic technology, Celestion, B&W .... those kinds of speakers were manufactured to last.
Also check out sound & vision, or Home theater magazines, you'll find ads in there in the back pages (at least they used to be)

Used speakers can be a good deal, but Buyer Beware.
E-bay is a good source online, but you will have to know your speaker mfgs. for one , and if you would like the sound they make. For instance you seen and heard a particular speaker you liked at a local stereo store, and you then seen them on e-bay at half the price it could be a good buy. Usually on e-bay the seller has a picture of the speaker and states the condition of the speaker. You can also check to see if the seller has any prior complaints against them. Another source could be a local pawn shops or local newspaper.
Sometimes places like Best Buy,and Circuit City sells slightly damaged or returned speakers at a reduced price. You might want to try them online also for some deals for discontinued speaker lines.

I would say they are one of the best pieces of stereo equpment to buy used, for a couple reasons.. A, they last a very long time, much longer than any piece of electronics, B, if they work, they work, there aren't really wear and tear issues to deal with...

2 important things when buying used speakers, first make sure they work, and 2 remove the grills, and check if the foam surround is in good condition, alot of times when somebody sells speakers, its because the foam surrounds have deteriorated

look on ebay, pawn shops, garage sales, just try to get to listen to them and make sure theres no rips on the cone and make sure the speaker's surround( the foam around the cone that lets it move) is tough and not deteriorating.

I would want to hear how they sound first. Pawn shops are good places for stuff like that. If not there e-bay always has what you want.
