not all cats are afraid of water. In fact, cat species that live in hot areas enjoy water. Tigers, lions, jaguars, ocelots, and jaguarundi all live in hot savannas, and they like taking dips in cool, refreshing streams and ponds. But cats from cold areas don't like the wet stuff that much. Snow leopards, lynx, bobcats, and cougars live in cold places, so they don't want to get wet. Water could make their fur less able to keep out the cold. Also, no cat wants to be splashed with water or dunked into a bath. Cats are independent and prefer to do things their own way. So it's an individual preference - just like people....some people love water sports and activities, while others absolutely hate it.

By cats you mean the common house cat, as above the Bengal cats love water,as do Tigers, Lions, Mountain lions, Pumas etc. So realy it is only the select few who dont like water. My cat is fascinated by water but will not paddle like the dogs!! go figure!

Cats are not scared of water, they just dont like the way people put them in the water. The splashing of water frightened them. they need to be handled gently and to avoid the face, and the water must be at its body temperature. By doing this with gentleness and thorough care your cats can be a big friend with water.

Yes I think it's a matter of taste... some cats love swimming, will jump in a bath or sink, some cats will run a mile to avoid getting wet

God dropped the first cat ever into the ocean accidently. She found the cat an hour later frozen in Antarctica. It was alive but now detested water.

My cat watches me when I am in the bath from the place where the soap dish goes, and sometimes dips his paws in the water. When I pull the plug he watches the water disappear down the plug hole and when there is only a little bit left he climbs in and has a paddle.

apparently cats aren't scared of water, and have a stronger natural ability with swimming than dogs. i was told its more to do with cats being very clean animals, and that they prefer not to get in water in case it dirtys their fur.Don't totally understand the logic of it myself, but like i said, it's what i've heard

I breed Bengal cats and they love water. They play with it, will jump in the bath with you and chase a hose around the garden getting soaked in the process. They can and do shake themselves just like dogs do to get rid of excess water on their fur.

A cat's sense of balance is very important in its feeling of security. There is no way to truly gain stability and balance in water.
Another good example of this is when cats get stuck in trees. They usually get too far out on a limb and any movement causes the limb to shake beyond their tolerance.
