I wish I had the magic answer, I have a couple that do that and have had cats all my life that do it. If he is peeing close to the box, (as some of mine have) try putting another litter box next to it. Maybe he is a reincarnated human male, and needs a urinal as well as a toilet. (smile). I do have several litter boxes, (right now I have 18 cats) but it still happens. You can also try putting the litter box on top of the pee spot and see if that works.

I really wish I had the magic answer, but good luck and maybe we will both get a good answer from someone else. Take care

If he just started it, see my answer to the question about the new baby in the house. I don't know if I feel like typing that whole thing again!

In short, have your cat's urine tested at the vet ASAP. When one of my cats peed on a couch, a beanbag, and a fish tank stand, I thought he was going crazy, but when I took him to the vet they said he would have died if I had waited 24 hours. It turns out he had a stone in his bladder that had got caught and blocked his track up. He didn't act any different even though he was in a lot of pain. Have it checked out!

Offer as many litter boxes as you can. He may have just decided he wants to pee in one and poop in another. Or he may just have to go...NOW and may pee before he makes it to a box. If he has to go that bad, it would point to a bladder problem or if the urine comes back ok, it could be diabetes, or some other disorder. Have the blood checked too. If it is stress related, follow the adivice in my other answer, along with following your vet and behaviorist's ideas. Good Luck!

maybe, he smells another cat, either male or female, outside. My youngest, a male, was about 4 years old and never pee'd except in his litter box. Then a stray male started hanging around outside, and my little guy started pee'ing on the carpets also. The vet said it was his way of marking his territory and warning the stray male to stay away from his females. Even if you haven't seen a stray around, doesn' t mean your cat can't smell one.....

Wish I could answer that...our cat pees in her litter box, and poops on the carpet. Clueless on why that is.

If you haven't done so already, you may want to get your kitty vet checked. If kitty has a urinary tract infection, this would cause him pain, and he would associate his litter box with this pain. Male cats also can become 'blocked', so for his health, and your peace of mind, a visit to the vet would be in order. Good luck!

It could be that he's marking territory...or that he has a bladder infection. Especially if he's never done it before...take him to the vet before he gets worse! My old cat had issues and ended up passing away due to bladder surgery complications... It could just be that he has a stone that needs to pass...because of the opening, male cats have more bladder issues than female cats (since the opening is bigger). Good luck...

If he is not neutered, he will spray his urine to mark his mating territory. Once he has marked a spot, he will continue this until he is neutered.

There is a way using a carpet cleaning product that contains live enzymes to clean the smell out. You can buy it in most grocery stores.

once they go somewhere, their specific smell is attributed to that spot and they believe that it is ok to go in that spot because they think it is their spot due to their smell being there, and i am sorry to say that no matter what you do, that smell will never go away
