I've had /got both and the Nikon wins on quality but the Canon's focusing system is quicker and quieter.
If you are going to do action shots then go for the Canon if you go for anythings else then go for Nikon.
Also Nikon's are difficult to use.
At 1600 ISO the Nikon is far superior to the Canon.
It is not ALL true what the so called "10 years pro photographer said"
I have been doing photography for over 44 years and have been pro for nearly 40 years.
I have always been at the leading edge of technology and I run 5 or 6 seminars on digital imaging and printing per year.
Yes to a certain extent a person has to have a "good eye" for a photograph but having the best equipment helps.
But if I have only learned a few things in my life they are, there is nothing right or wrong in photography, photographs are very subjective and are only as good as the viewer.
Your can have the most perfectly technical shot of a spider if the viewer doesn't like spiders than you've had it.
Also remember that only a very small minority of people who look at a photograph will have any sort of technical knowledge nearly all people who view photos know nothing about the technical side of photography, but guess what they are the ones whose opinions you should value and of course your own.
If you achieve what you want then that is all that matters.
Also listen to others and improve on what they tell you.

Wow, the age old question... I think Canon or Nikon was around way before Chicken or Egg.
Here's the low down dirty truth on the cameras... (are you ready? this is a secret between you, me and every other professional who knows what they are talking about as most people above me don't).
.... It isn't the camera, it's the photographer. The worlds cheapest camera can produce the world's most beautiful prints in the hands of a professional. However, on the opposite, the world's most expensive camera is nothing more than a paperweight in the hands of an idiot.
You can choose Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Konika, Olympus, Hasslelad or whatever and unless you are any good, they won't do you any good. You might as well as buy a disposable camera from Wal-Mart or Walgreens or wherever.
Once you get into a pro bracket, you will find that the DSLR's are all in the same category. Whether you go NIkon or Canon. There is no proven best in the pro-DSLR category. Sure, you will get people that LIKE one over the other due to personal preferences or one bad experience, but it's not a proven fact that Nikon is better than Canon or Konika is better than Olympus.
Go to a store that sells pro digital cameras and pick them up. Hold them, feel them in your hand. Find the one that you are most comfortable holding (the one that fits best in your hand) and go with that one. After all, you will be spending a lot of time with it in your hand if it doesn't fit good, you are going to regret it.

That depends on what type of photograph you want. I've had both and found that they were very different. Both are good, but different. Canon gives a very sharp photograph, it is strong and reliable and just the perfect camera for a war zone. Nikon on the other hand is much more subtle, and though Nikon also has a very tough reliable body, I just love the delicateness, the softness, and something specialness about the picture quality, much more suited for photographing artful things, whereas Canon is much more documentary.

if you like the lenses of either brand, stick with that DSLR. the lenses are more an investment than the camera body.
i like Canon and have a 20D. i like it over the Nikon for the ISO1600. i don't like using a flash and take lots of photos indoors. might do some reading at dpreview.com or the-digital-picture.com

both are good. Nikon has a slightly better rep & is therefore more expensive. most pros use Nikon. lots of serious amateurs use Canon.
