In public schools, a law called IDEA provides special education services for children who meet the requirements for specific disabilities covered by the law. OHI is one of the disabilities covered under IDEA. OHI stands for Other Health Impaired. Children who are failing school as a direct result of a health condition may qualify for special education services under IDEA.

Section 504 is a law that provides equality of access to all people who have a disability that impairs any of the normal "life functions." Section 504 requires all businesses and organizations to make accommodations which will allow the disabled to take advantage of programs and services.

A child with ADHD may qualify for accommodations to his school facility or school day based on Section 504.

People often confuse special services with accommodations.
Talk to your chil'd school about what he needs. They will help you figure out the best course of action.

a 504 is for a disability that is not ED or MR or TMR or LD...
lots of kids on meds for ADHD have a 504 if they are not SPED
talk to the counselor at your son's school
our 504s are allowed special considerations such as small group testing for standardized tests(Iowa Test of Basic Skills, SAT 9 etc)

Generally a section 504 is for children who have physical impairments only...such as a child with a bum leg...these impairments do not affect their learning abilities.
