No, he was a Nazirite from birth. The Nazirites were a religious group within Judaism that took vows consecrating themselves to God. They did not cut their hair; drink alcoholic beverages; eat grapes, etc. They couldn't be around dead bodies, even by accident. Both men and women could be Nazirites.

John the Baptist was a Nazirite; the Apostle Paul took a Nazirite vow at Acts 18:18; since this verse mentions he cut his hair off, this suggests he had a previous vow.

The story is actually not quite as mythological as 'his strength was in his hair' I don't think.

He was a Nazarite which was a group of people who volentarily took on some extra laws. If I remember correctly they couldn't drink, marry, or cut their hair. So it wasn't so much that his power was in his hair as his power was in this covenant he made with God. Letting his hair be cut was a willful breaking of this vow he'd made and so God took away his power.

no, Samson was not a hippie. his strength was in his hair and was a gift from god. that's why when delilah cut his hair, he was as week as a lamb.
