Please go to start--run--type winver ---hit enter....it would show your opertaing system version and service pack installed on your machine.
if that is SP1 then try and dowload sp2 from microsoft site...that would work only if you are using genuine OS not pirated one.
other options is to open ur browser(IE)..click on tools menu and click on update.
it would pop up microsoft update website.
say yes when it tries to install a dll and search for updates required for your comp.
install all critical updates first and then go for custom one.
hope that helps

SP2 Is a large file(~100,000kB). If You Had Dialup, then You Might have not downloaded it at all(Dialup runs at 56kb per Second, and 1kB=~8kb{notice B/b},taking a long time). If you have DSL/Cable, and you're certain you downloaded it, the reason Microsoft's webpage denies you have SP2 WAS BECAUSE IT'S ON YOUR COMPUTER BUT YOU HAVE NOT IINNSSTTAALLLLEEDD(Installed) SP@. To Install, Open My Computer, and on the tools menu {It should be near the top of the window} choose folder options(It should be the last one).
Choose the View Tab and make sure "Display The Contents of System Folders" is checked, and "hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide Protected operating system files (recommended)" is UNCHECKED. Finally, choose "show hidden files and folders", which instantly makes the other dot disappear. Then press OK.

Back in "my Computer" double click the (C:) Icon. You shouls see some icons that seems to be lighter than others. That's ok. THat's what the "show hidden files and folders" click was for.
There should be a folder named "WUTemp" Double click the Folder. Inside should be .exe files of updates you downloaded , weather it's installed or not. SP2 should be among them. Just Double click the SP2 File and Enjoy!

To know whether SP2 is installed successfully or not, right click on My Computer Icon on Desktop, select Properties. There it shows whether SP2 is installed or not.

If you dont see SP2 there, then probably MS is right. Try downloading again.

The fact is, can you find the file on your PC? If you know what the file name is you can search for it if you lost it. You should always download it to your desktop first, then you can always find it. Good luck!

Do you have your windows XP installation registered? As in checked with Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage). Probably this is needed.
