My spouse is most likely getting a job transfer up there and we will be moving to the DC area. We will most likely need to move near the Pentagon side of town - not sure where that is - so we'd like to live in proximity.
We are probably looking to rent a nice townhome, preferably with a garage, for around $1500 - $1700/month, if that. A rental home would be okay too, or maybe an apartment if it's not a high rise - definitely going for the attached garage, preferably 2 car, although I know those are rare and expensive.
Any advice on where to move to? Great websites for rental places, etc.? If you guys need more info let me know, totally appreciate the help!
Oh, also please let me know what living in DC is like if you live/have lived there. I've only been there once for vacation. Thanks so much!!!

P.S. Laural, just as an FYI, I meant to say nice-ish, hence my dash - in lieu of "nicer" as I was attempting to find nice (or at least decent) hence the "ish" for my preference of quality in moving to D.C. It is a shame that Yahoo Answers will not allow us to delete answers like yours.

We live in Alexandria, but Arlington is closer to The Pentagon. There are neighborhoods in Arlington that fit your bill, I think. We have a townhouse in Alexandria (Fairfax County) and pay $1500 per month. No garage though.

I have lived here since 1993, and my husband has lived here since middle school (his Dad was stationed at the Pentagon). It is a good area. Fairfax county has the best school system - Arlington is so-so. Depends if you have kids.

This is a great place to live. Tons of culture. Lots of diversity. Many great things to do. You will love it!!

Try http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/

You may have trouble though as a warning. $1500-$1700 does not buy much these days unless you are commuting long distances. And you DO NOT want to be doing that. It is ugly. You can easily find yourself spending 4 hours a day or more on the road.

Try the Springfield/Franconia area. It is South of the Pentagon with Metro access not far. Metro is a life savior if commuting downtown and especially the Pentagon. You may be able to squeak out a rental for that much. It will most likely be an older house.

If you work at the Pentagon and are active military, many live in Ft Belvior. They have new housing that will only charge your housing allotment.

I'm originally from the Maryland suburbs of DC (very close in) but I'm kinda not as familiar with the Northern Virginia suburbs. I know someone who lives near the West Falls Church Metro station which is I believe actually part of Arlington. The Pentagon is in Northern VA. In the Maryland suburbs, Silver Spring is nice and they have a new downtown center and lots of good restaurants, and the Metro (DC's subway system) goes there too. BUT that's on the other side of downtown from the Pentagon... However as far as living in DC goes in general: The region, in particular Northern VA, has terrible traffic congestion. It's hot and humid in the summer. It's expensive, and the people are not the friendliest. But the Metro system is very nice and efficient. That and the fact that DC has the Smithsonian and lots of monuments all in close proximity to each other, and they're all free, are the only things I miss about DC. (In other words it's a better city to visit than to live in, at least in my opinion). Haha sorry to sound so negative, as much as I complain about it I do miss it there sometimes.

And a good website to check housing rentals and a lot of other stuff too is www.craigslist.org (I'm sure you've heard of it but it's a good resource).

heavily, the persons who say the city isn't possibility-free have not been contained in the city for years, obviously. the realm at present adjacent the Marine Barracks on the east area, and on the west area all the thanks to the Capitol is extremely staggering. extremely possibility-free also as there's a lot of safe practices for the Capitol and in the different case. The parts to the north of the Marine Barracks are staggering as far north as structure Ave. NE (per chance a splash better north the closer you get to the Capitol). something better than a block east of the Marine Barracks is undesirable information in the event you are not conscious of the realm (there are some very staggering neighborhoods, yet you would possibly want to understand what you're doing). something better than 2 blocks south of the Marine Barracks is likewise undesirable information, completely and thoroughly. the realm round Nationals stadium is starting to be immediately, yet full of large condominium homes finished of small gadgets, no longer truly solid for a family individuals. outdoors of the prompt part of the Marine Barracks, Glover Park, Georgetown, Palisades, Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, sixteenth St. Heights, and Chevy Chase (DC area) are very staggering. outdoors of Cleveland and Woodley Parks, besides the undeniable fact that, public transportation is extra restricted (buses purely, no direct get entry to to the subway). All of those parts are severe priced. A 2-mattress room on the Hill (each and every of the parts around the Barracks) will run you between $2100 and $2500 a month to employ, and $400,000+ to purchase (that could be a scouse borrow, btw). Georgetown, Palisades, and Woodley Park are even better. the proper bargains I easily have seen contained in the city are in Glover Park, yet you're nevertheless talking about $1700+ to employ and $350,000+ to purchase a 2-mattress. The suburbs may be proper for a family individuals searching for area on a restricted funds. Even a $1M+ abode contained in the city gained't get you a backyard. yet do not enable the "DC is like the Gaza Strip" chorus fool you.

The downside of D.C., it an be a pretty dangerous place. Even walking in the "daylight" hours, in good neighborhoods. Me and my mom, were held up with a gun, because this thug wanted my purse. He threatened to "shoot" me. We were walking home, from the library, on 16th street. My mom had her purse grabbed from her so fast, (another inccident), that the force threw her to the ground. She used to Teach in D.C. We also lived in an exclusive part of D.C., and a few blocks from there, a person was murdered in the parking area of their Apartment Complex. Also someone was found in their Apartment, in the area. This was S.W. part of Washington. I'm sure that Crime has gotten worse since then.
All i'm saying, is that their is a lot of Crime. There is a "Bad Side," as well as the "Good." People are desperate. Washington is an **interesting place, just be careful...

**I think that the public is allowed to "sit in," when Congress is in session. I think that when the light is lit, on top of the Dome of the Capitol, that means it is in session.

Oh, if you want information about housing, prices, maps etc., you can get The Apartment Finder (Free), for the Washington Area--Md, & Va. (1-800-222-3651). You can go Online and "shop around," even Choose the Apt. or Townhouse and have it Ready for you when you Arrive. Look at Photos, Floorplans etc.

The advantage of working in DC is that you can live in northern virginia, southern maryland or DC proper and still be within commuting distance. If money is an issue, a lot of people live outside the metro-DC area, but there is the commute to deal with (if you drive) or the millions who use the metro every morning.

I lived in southern maryland (clinton) and worked in DC, and b/c of personal reasons I havd to move, but it was with reluctance.

hope this helped...feel free to reply if you need more info.
