Well if the dog knows you and nipped I hope your brother doesn't have kids, the dog sounds a little dangerous. Dogs should only be biting on command not when they feel like it. Why it did it to you I can't say if he knew you already. Maybe you were by anohter animal that he didn't like the smell of. Your brother needs to contain that dog, before it really bites someone good.

It might be the after shave. But it might also have perceived your attitude. And I did, too, by the fact that, even though you have known this dog for a year, you referred to it as "it," not even mentioning its gender. Any dog I've ever known was either "he" or "she," never "it." Maybe the attitude is because the dog bit you, or maybe the dog bit you because of your attitude.
They can smell it, you know; stronger than after shave. On the other hand, if your after shave smells strong enough that a human might consider that a reason, then it is strong enough to be overpowering to a dog. And probably to the sensitive old lady sitting near you on the bus (like me). Tone it down or use plain witch hazel, which is better for you anyway.

This isn't about the dog itself, but if the bite broke the skin you should see a Dr. My dog got me a few months ago (during a traumatic toe nail-trimming incident) and I figured since I knew the dog and he had his shots I was ok. Besides it was a small scrape. When I went to the doctor a week later he freaked out and told me I should've gone to the ER as soon as it happened because there is a possibility of a bone infection that can require amputation! Who knew? They made me get x-rays and take all kinds of antibiotics for a tiny little bite on my hand. So I would definitely see a doctor is he broke your skin!

The ankle biting should have been stopped right away. You permitted it, so as far as the dog is concerned, it was an ok thing to do. I have 4 dogs. We play and roughhouse with them all the time. Lesson one we taught them, no mouthing. They know they may not bite, no matter how excited they get. Your brother's dog needs some training before he gets overly excited and really hurts someone.

Playfully or not, the dog has tried to show dominance over you in the past. Be more assertive with the dog, read Jan Fennell's book about dominance. Your brother also needs to do this, and the dog needs to be shown where he ranks on the totem pole.

Sounds like a smaller breed of a dog and many times even though they don't mean too their yappy mouths are always going and teeth will get you. Not necessarily that it meant to bite. Vicious dogs lunge at you they don't nip at your ankles over and over
