Maybe this isn't responsive enough, but here is my advice:
The best gift to get anyone is generally something that has some meaning to them, or even better, to the relationship you have with them. Something small, inexpensive, and simple can be an excellent gift if it shows that you know what they are all about. If he enjoys foreign films, maybe a poster of his favorite film, or even something that his favorite character treasures.
Maybe you have been out together and shared a special experience. Something that symbolizes that experience can be an excellent gift.
Above all, a good gift should show that you truly know and value the person and what makes them an individual and special to you.

Purchase an interesting piece of art off E-bay. There are some nice sketches and paintings available there that are priced very cheap. (I sort of feel sorry for the artists that resort to trying to sell on E-bay because it seems like there just isn't a good market there for art.)

Maybe buy tickets to a museum and put them in a cool card? That way, he can take YOU with him ...and you can spend more time with him :)
