Hi well my Dog is a lab he is one years old We are training him in a school in Columbia SC for search and Rescue and Kadiving.. We feed him 3 weel balanced meals a day with special dog food from the clinic and he is a inside dog during the night and roams free in our 8 acres during they day. We take him out the lake to jump off the dock and catch his favorite dummy toy which is 20 lbs since he is still only a year old and then we take a life vest and have him pull me in slowly then i let go when he gets tired ( all recommended by the Instructor) I had a man at the lake tell me he was going to report me for DOG ABUSE!!! He is loved and well well cared for i mean he has his own fund to go to school on and have free medical whenever he needs it for the rest of his life i was just wondering I mean does that guy have the right or will they prove him wrong with the info i have given?

If everyone took that good of care of their dogs the world would be a far better place.
I try and try to get people to take time and train with their dogs. Many are working breeds and without a job to do they get easily bored and destructive.
Sounds like your dog is going to have agreat life and a good job.
Good luck and don't let an idiot scare you.

There are always people who think they know your business and won't hesitate to tell you their opinion of it. Don't let it get to you and just ignore it.

From what you've described, you're doing exactly what the instructor recommended. From what I know of my local rescue dog school, they always have the best interest of the dogs in mind. They won't needlessly risk the animals, or recommend anything cruel or that will put the animal in uneccesary danger. If you follow their instructions, the same will hold true for you.

So, yes, it sounds like he is wrong. Does he have the right? People can say anything they want. If he calls the police or a humane society, you would have no problem proving there is no abuse.

I have abused dogs. Your Lab is loving the interaction pulling you around. Remember dogs were bred for a purpose.Labs love to swim and do water retrieving. Border collies love to nip at all the childrens heels in the back yard to herd them. You sound like a great pet owner I wish there were more of you. We actually play a game called beat the dog. My fosters end up running to me when we start. It sounds bad doesn't it?? All of mine are large lab size and I will pat their front quarters and say beat the dog in a happy upbeat voice and they all come running with tail wag and tongues hanging. All afraid their gonna miss something. I am rough with all of my dogs they love the interaction they are not chihuahuas that are fragile. Watch two dogs get together. They can roll and and bite and run over each other we as people would get hurt. Your lab thinks you rock!!! You are even teaching him a usefull skill to help that cranky *** old man find his granddaughter one day.

Your dog sounds like one of the happiest dogs on the planet. As far as training, dogs love it. They are interacting with you and/or their trainer and getting lots of positive attention. Taking him out in the water is another great activity for him. He is getting great exercise, but all he cares is that he is having playtime with you. You seem to be keeping his health in mind with watching for fatigue and not pushing him past that. So, he eats well, plays hard, and has a great life. No, I don't think anyone could report you for abuse. Have you ever spoken to the person that is complaining? Perhaps they are mis-interpreting something they see. Maybe talking to them and explaining things would clear up their concern. While you are not obligated to do so, you never know, you may have a new friend in the end.

I have a service dog who goes with me everywhere. I always have people telling me how cruel it is to do that with her. What they don't understand is that she is specially trained and I need her. Plus, she loves to work and me with me. Dogs need something to do, but a lot of people mistakenly think dogs should be at home sleeping on a pillow all day, with nothing more taxing than a quick spot outside to do their business!
If you are working the dog and training the dog as the trainer advised, you will have a great search and rescue dog who will surely save many lives! Congrats!
